I'd argue they would've done this last year but it was "Developed enough"...

Sounds like a variant of Swap Force...but instead of two toy halves, we can deploy vehicles under them. IMO still much better than just a larger Trap Master. If this becomes a vehicle GAME, totally nullifying characters themselves...I won't be happy. I'm sure they didn't go that far.

IMO announcing online is much bigger than this.

Okay, but seriously though. I really hope this guy's just trying to get attention, because if the gimmick really is vehicles... I'll probably still get the game, but I won't be as hyped for it as I'd like to be.

We pretty much already knew as much from the book and prototype leaks.

Honestly, vehicle games doesn't appeal to me at all. To me it seems that it's going to be Swap Force all over again but the gates are unlocked by special vehicles where you play horrible mini-games only to get hats and other useless stuff that's not related to the game at all.

If that's the case, I'm just sticking with the pack-in base set's machine Skylander and I'll ignore the rest of the machine gates and won't worry about getting 100%. Basically that's what I done with Swap Force as I didn't see any reason to really buy 8 Swappers to unlock all the boring gates.

If it's a game where you need to actually do a lot of playing around with machines, then I'll probably ignore it entirely as I simply don't care for racing games, shooting tanks, etc. I want a normal beat'em up game not some macho vehicle fighter.

^ Kinda in the same boat. In fact, as an experiment I bought TT on XBO and I'm running through it with no traps and no trap masters to see if it feels "less"...it is, but not considerably. Getting chummy with that possibility if they dont bring some of the items that is on my "do not cross line".

For me, it depends on how they use the vehicles. It may be innovative toys AND also innovative gameplay. I will wait and see, but it sounds promising so far.

A cool way to introduce them would be an open world game.
They wouldn't be a "gimmick" but they will help you travel around the map.

If it's REALLY about vehicles, then only these things can get me to buy it:

1. Series 3
2. Series 2
3. Minis return
4. At least one AMAZING character from each element
5. And not so imporant, Traps returm

Lego Dimensions is going to take over if vehicles is the new gimmick.

Would be cool to have a car based game but if existing Skylanders and traps don't work I'm out

Assuming the vehicles prediction is correct, I seriously doubt that it will be limited to racing. I would expect full combat with the vehicles. I also doubt that the entire game is vehicles. They would be smart to still have plenty of 'walking' levels in order to maximize sales of characters and vehicles.

It would be interesting to see if the gimmick figures aren't figures at all this time around, but are the vehicles themselves. And assuming the old megablocks pics still apply, then older figures (core at least) would need to playable in the vehicles. Either way, we surely will have another new portal.

Am I the only one who loves this gimmick? The toys are going to look freaking amazing. The gameplay will also become new and fresh. As long as traps and lightcores return, I'll be 100% satisfied.

"New and fresh" doesn't necessarily mean "better".
We currently don't have enough informations to properly say what this will be.

But as far as the characters remain the same quality of the leaked Fire Skylander I will be more than happy to have new heroes to play with.

skylanders overdrive?...

Iirc only one of the book writers and some of the support guys actually read the forums. Last time devs were around it was a composer who left development and I don't think he's visited DS in a long time.
Don't let fan ideas get in the way of the group's and all that, can't blame them. And a fandom community manager hasn't been a good idea for a lot of games lately so no thanks.

@CountMoneyBone I agree. I'm going to get on and a bunch of chips so that I can:
1. Make the Mcd's toys work like real figures(Includeing Kaos IF I can get it to read traps)
2.Take a Skylander on two paths without buying 2 figures
3. (IF I can get it to read traps) Have one for each of the villains I actually like if the chips are too exspensive
4. Or cloning a Skylander with Max money to buy all the hats and other stuff without lowering the money level of a charecter
5. Anything else I think of(Or other think of that I want to try)

I really hope it's not a full game of vehicle level, like giants had. Those were the worse. They render having different unique characters useless.

Autogyro Adventure and Secret Vault of Secrets aren't full vehicle levels, nor are Arkeyan Armory and Skyhighlands. HALF the level is shooter, the other is your usual gameplay. It's 6 minutes out of 12 it isn't hurting anyone.

I hate this vehicles thing. What I love about skylanders is the uniqueness of each of the characters, throwing in this stuff will reduce the differences among skylanders. Plus, this franchise has always been about the characters, not vehicles. I hope this is not true. If it is, however, I will try to ignore as much as it is possible the gimmicks. It sucks...a lot.

They didn't say it'll be replaced with vehicles. For all we know, it's an excuse for the gimmick gates, or the gimmicklanders use vehicles to move. Unless VV has a death wish for the franchise they wouldn't outright throw the gameplay out of the table and replace it with rail shooter/racing entirely - being the spinoff devs,they'd know better to keep it there. Besides, the shooter levels are very few in the franchise and for special sections, it's a plataformer/hack and slash cliche that so many games do that having it take over would be just silly.

I hope you are right, replacing the previous games mechanics just to implement vehicles would be kind of a hara-kiri. Yes it sounds logic that the vehicles will limit to the new gimmick and nothing more. Let's wait to see if other features like online will be finally included.

Could be that the gimmick skylanders actually transform into vehicles. Skylanders-Go Bots. If this is the case, okay. But to have the vehicles connect somehow would be bad.

If vehicles will be this year "innovation" they will probably at more as a side-gimmick like traps this year.

Something that it's important Story-wise but isn't required to 100% the game.

The Starter Pack might include a gimmick character, a new Core, a vehicle (which would work like a Giant and would be able to open all the "Gates") and maybe a new Portal.
Unless the Portal is the "vehicle" that lets you play as both your Skylander and his own vehicle.

That would be interesting.
I guess a unique vehicle for each of the old and new characters would open up a lot of possibilities if implemented correctly.
