So when Skylanders 5 comes around will there still be a spot for the traps or will there be nothing.
Just a though but it doesn't matter to me because I'm done after Trap Team.

This is something I've been asking since the Trap Toys were shown.
They're different from other figures, because they are useless if you lack a Traptanium portal. Skylanders 5 has been in production since SF. So if Villains are playable, then that decision was made long before it started. I think it would just be too costly to incorporate a Trap slot and speaker into every future portal. I anticipate Traps NOT working in future games, which is a shame, because the Traps are bloody expensive for an 'empty' toy! This will be the first truly wrong move Skylanders makes, by alienating a toy type. From there on, more of the previous figures will be dropped, and people will back out once their existing collections become obsolete.

Well, you can still pierce little holes in the traps and make some beautiful necklace.
But apart this, i hardly imagine another utility in the future. It's a very nice feature but there's very few chances to see them again.

i think tfb will do something new with them in skylanders6... vv will definitive not use them in skylanders5. its two companies with two very very different take on the skylanders franchise. we have clearly seen that now with swap force and trap team out...

I honestly don't see why they wouldn't support them.
They are not just magic objects, they contain playable characters. TfB, V.V. And Activision may be greedy, but they aren't stupid. They wouldn't entirely remove a gimmick. There may or may not be Villain Stashes, and there probably won't be new enemies to capture (even if it would open up possibilities for an entire new world of Pokémon-esque possibilities), but I expect them to fully work, from this game on.

we dont have any evidence if tfb will support the traps, but most likely they will have some new gimmick next time, that will not involve the traps (there is 4 years before they release skylanders6).... also we know by now that vv is a different developer that have their different take on what skylanders should be. vv have no reason to support the the traps, had it only been new figures then im sure they would have added them. but there is a huge change to the portal, and i honestly dont think they will have that on their portal. and take away the importance of their own new gimmicks. but at best we will see some of the new figurines as villains.

Frankly, all dev houses have been extremely passive on supporting last year's gimmick in the new game. Hence, why does anyone think it will be any different this time? Folks, don't confuse character support with gimmick support. Since traps aren't characters, they "escape" from needing to support it.

There is absolutely no basis to assume either way is correct, at least until we hear about the next Skylanders game, and even then, we won't have the details until next Summer at earliest.

I don't foresee them using the traps in the next game unfortunately. Unlike something like the discs that Infinity uses, the traps are such a different shape (and required to be put into something rather than just sitting on a base) that it would be hard to keep using them without having the slot for them on all future portals.
Now, in my head, I think it'd be nice to have some sort of "hollow" villain figure. The thing would be larger (to accommodate even the most widest/tallest traps) and you simply put the trap inside of it. Like that.

Personally I think that the next portal will have a slot to insert new peripherals for portals. So like a USB port to insert portal expansions. This would create infinite possibilities for future games.

1. They have the trap slot built-in to the new portal. 2. They have an adapter that can be bought separately for traps. 3. They don't go too crazy with the next game's gimmick and release a Portal Owner's pack. |

It IS possible the trap slot will stay but turn into an "accessory" slot. Maybe for weapons or vehicles?
That would keep the backwards compatibility with Traps. Selling a trap is like 99% profit. Look at the effort needed to make a figure Vs a trap. Those Disney disks are all about raking in the money. "Toys to life" is one thing. "plastic blob to life" is hardly a selling point. "Oh look, this overpriced plastic block lets me play an in game character for 60 seconds that's already in the game and on the disk..." |

It would be downright stupid if Skylanders, moving forward, didn't allow you to use your traps AND allow for the trapping of new villains. Downright... dumb.
I personally am optimistic they will keep this aspect going forward, which adds to the variety of each new game, while also introducing a new play style for the year. I do remember hearing someone here saying they heard from the devs that ALL Skylander games moving forward will have connecting story/lore. Here's hoping that means they will keep the trapping aspect, and the aspect of trapped villains acting on the side of good now, in terms of the overall storyline. Like I said in another topic, I hope future Skylander games bring back everything that made the past games unique. Elemental Gates, Dual Elemental Gates, Swap Zones, Feats of Strength, Traptanium Shards in levels, and new trappable villains going forward. Those, along with 4 Adventure Packs per game, Bonus Missions, Survival Missions, Score and Time Attack Modes will make for far excellent Skylander games.

The forwards-ability of the traps has been a point of contention I've been reading about for a while. I can understand and agree with the need/want for them to work in future skylanders games.
It was part of the reason for my decision to only get one of each of the different trap sculptures, and i will actively advocate only getting one of each element (until i actually held one, yeh i caved hahaha). i think that the trap holder slot opens up a wide range of possible future "gimmicks", for better or for worse. weapons, hats, trinkets, vehicles, could all be added via the slot (for an extra purchase, of course), essentially an extra item slot that doesn't interfere with the actual item figure sitting on the portal. It seems to have too much potential for money making, with pretty much a whole new category of toys to add to the wallet drain. Personally though, whilst future games do play a small part in my purchasing, it is not that much of determinant for me, if I started to really worry about how things worked in the next games, i would always be purchasing a game behind what is being released. When it comes right down to it, what matters to me is what they do in the game they were designed for, whether i can justify purchasing them, in relation to the game that is out now. Because as much as they have confirmed a next game, it can be cancelled the day before it is set to be released, or it could turn out to be a game i would really not be intereted in playing. nothing is guaranteed till i have it in my hand.

I wouldn't base my purchase of a future game on it's support for traps.
I don't think having the traps and playable villains will add to the next game and could detract from the next "gimmick". If I like what they do with the next game I will buy it, otherwise I won't. I am certainly not buying "all" the traps pokemon style. I got the 2 3 packs to give me one of each, that is pretty much it. I will get Kaos and the two new elements and be done with it. I doubt I will even buy any more Trap Masters, I just don't like the figures they released so far. So apart from expanding my core collection a bit it's a cheap(ish) game this time round for me! |

To be honest, the focus on villains is nice for one game, just not I would "want that" per se every game. Making it available, sure...but again---there's only so much dev time these people have. Just like the decision to not support past Adventure packs, I too think they will make a decision to cut support for some of this to FURTHER the content / storyline of the NEXT big adventure. It's not like Cracker Prison is broken again in #5.

I agree that trappable villains is probably not going to be part of future games, but it's hard to see future portals not including a slot for them. Each time a new portal has been released it has replaced the previous portal, you haven't needed to keep the old ones. If they don't have a slot - which as people have pointed out would give the potential for other gimmicks to be inserted - then you would forever need to keep this current portal as well as the latest one that is released.

It still makes no logical sense to release a game that allows you to trap 46 villains and then they call the idea quits. I'd seriously question my loyalty to the Skylanders brand if they didn't keep the trapping aspect in each new game. It doesn't make sense to be like, "Oh, hey we're going to allow you to trap 46 villains and that's it. Next game."
They need to allow for the trapping of new enemies per game, while introducing the new game's style of play, not begin and end at 46.

Perhaps not no function but a heavily diminished one I can think of a few...the traps will probably do something, but as far as trapping villains in the next game I don't think that'll be the case. The 3DS game's a pretty big indicator on that too, given that it doesn't even USE traps, making these things in all honesty that much more pointless.

Here's my two cents. I think the traps will do something, but there won't be villains to capture in future games. That's the thing for Trap Team. Maybe they'll cause a small explosion of that element, or maybe they'll each have a unique attack t each element, who knows. But I HIGHLY doubt the traps will do NOTHING, otherwise they would risk tons of parents cutting off their kids from the series for wasting so much money.

This is why I don't want to buy traps at full price. I'll wait to see if the 5th game supports them or if the 8 pack goes on sale. I do hope Villains get their own figures. With the whole villains gone good, I don't see why not. Figures just feel more personal than a piece of simple cystal shaped plastic to me.
