Do we have free will? [CLOSED]
John 3-16 Ripto Gems: 0
#1 Posted: 03:11:15 18/11/2013 | Topic Creator
I was thinking about the bible, and I noticed a few things:

In many parts of the Bible, God claims to have created man to have free will.

Then, in zechariah, (11:12-13) The Lord claims:

“And I said unto them, ‘If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. And the Lord said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the Lord.”

This is a prophecy stating that the Lord and His life will be paid for with a goodly price (30 silvers).

Then, ~500 years later, in Matthew 26:14-16, it says:

“Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests and asked, ‘How much will you pay me to betray Jesus to you?’ And they gave him thirty pieces of silver. From that time on, Judas began looking for the right time and place to betray Jesus.”

So if God created man to have free will, how can he predict what happens? If you are destined to do something 500 years before it happened, it wouldnt be free will.

Thoughts on this?

Absolutly nothing, but it's something random I found that I like to post in such topics.

You picked the wrong forum for e-missionary work. Most members are extraordinarily stubborn and view these topics as attacks on their beliefs/views... of course, it doesn't help that the people who usually do this are a lot more forceful with their words. <.<

I think that free will can only be achieved in stateless society in which there are no nations and political worlds of ideas and religions that have somewhat of a rule over us. This is a fantasy world of course and cannot be delivered in practice even if all the 7 billion of us would demand it. As long as we allow us all to live in the world of basic human rights and freedoms, there is no need to rush on these highly political volatile things.

If God created everything and knows everything, did he create Lucifer knowing he would betray God and become Satan? Does that mean God created Lucifer to specifically become the devil? There's a religious question for you. I'm honestly curious for responses to this.

We do have free will.
But I guess you could think of it as: Yes, He knows what we are going to do before we do it, by our own free will....
....
does that make sense? e.e

I believe that while we humans are the architects of our own actions, there are some occurrences that cannot be explained by logic or science. But if you truly and blindly believe that a supernatural being controls your every move, I feel very sorry for you indeed.

I believe we have free will. These passages just made me rethink that.

Another theory I have is that God played a more active role back then, and now he prefers to observe us and our behavior.

That's my prevailing theory. I do believe he was responsible for the initial phenomenon that made the universe what it is, but now he observes the world and watches over those looking to peacefully enter the afterlife.

Not even related to religion, people don't entirely have the ability to do whatever they want. The circumstances they were born into heavily influence what kind of person they will grow up to be. It isn't realistic to believe that every single person has the chance to become president or succeed in life. It's sad but it is also true.
