I don't see what the big deal is. As long as it's possible for you to carry on a conversation, that's good enough social skills, right?

Who cares if someone's a bit awkward or nerdy? Seriously. Why should we judge by what society wants?

I'm saying this because there is one of my friends who constantly gets slammed for having bad social skills because he likes to talk about anime and school. He's really one of the most level-headed people I know, and yet he apparently has "bad social skills."

Ay, caramba.

Basically, society seems to care about that imaginary "reputation" a lot.

I talk about anime at school and I watch it at lunch. People make fun of me at first and then they see Shizuo throw a vending machine at Izaya. Then they just start watching the show

I think it's more that people with bad social skills only want to talk about one thing and doesn't talk about much anything else. If the guy can have a conversation about other stuff I don't see the problem, but if say people are making a big fuss over a fight that happened and they go "Goku would kick both their asses any day" that's just kinda ehh

I have a cousin who is labeled with having bad social skills, yet we can talk for hours about whatever. He just has issues talking to people who don't understand him.

There is this one girl at my school who only learned English 3 years ago (no idea what she spoke before, she gives a different answer every time someone asks), and she has the absolute worst social skills of anyone I've ever seen. It's not because of the language barrier, it's because she's so scatterbrained that it is literally impossible to have a conversation with her. She will forget what she's talking about in mid-sentence, she will use words that are totally out of context simply because she likes them, and she even forgets things like her name and age. This is why I said that if it's possible for you to have a conversation at least, you have good social skills.

She's a really nice girl, and she makes straight As. She would be a great friend if one could actually talk to her.

EDIT: She says she takes various medication. That's probably the reason why.

There was this girl that would sit by herself most of the time. People went up and talked to her, but she just made harder have conversation with her. I don't know if she did it intentionally(To be left alone), or if she did it by accident. I really wanted to talk to her, but she was too far from me. I had to walk 20-25 feet to get to her and sit by her, which I didn't felt comfortable doing. I didn't want to creep her out either. I just wanted to give her some company since she seemed sad. I would've probably gotten along with her too, since I'd be totally fine by her difficult time talking and the quiet time.
Now if learned that she just wanted to be left alone, then I guess I would just let her be.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS STORY?
I don't know. Be friendly, I guess. Because you may loose your chance.

I was that girl in school, the quiet one that always sat in the back of the classroom, away from everyone else. I would try to be nice and friendly to people, if they talked to me, but I'm just quiet by nature. It's difficult for me to open up and just be a social butterfly. But I didn't mind sitting by myself, left alone with my thoughts. Any friends I made in school always seemed to leave eventually, anyway, so I was content on my own. I was used to it. I'm just not really much of a social person. But I try to be nice to people. I believe my social skills have improved over the years, but I'm still far from being a social butterfly. And I never will be one.

That's the thing tho, I'm pretty god damn aweful at doing that. I can generally hold a conversation a little while if it's something I have a strong opinion/like for, or maybe add in the odd witty comment to a group discussion, but I cannot just talk for the sake of talking. Which is what most people want to do. If you ask me about school or classes or etc, I'll just respond with something along lines of 'good' or 'fine'.

Tho I guess it's not inherently bad social skills, I understand most aspects of socialising and basic social queues and signals, I'm just incredibly introverted. I find listening to conversations more enjoyable than participating in them.

Yeah, I'm kinda the same way. I can't just talk for the sake of talking. I can't go on and on about nothing. Kids at school used to always ask me why or how I was so quiet. I never gave them an answer, 'cause I never really had one, but I always wondered how they could talk constantly about nothing at all. I didn't understand them and they didn't understand me.

That's perfectly fine. See, I believe that if you can talk to someone in clear, comprehensible dialect that actually makes sense without freaking out, then you have good social skills.

I feel like this exactly.

Sometimes, I just kinda sit down and listen to other students' conversations to get an idea of what makes a good thing to talk about, but they always talk about how bad the teachers are or swear a lot. Which just makes me feel awkward because I don't agree with any of that... :c

My assistant principal has argued that video games and the internet have made us more introverted and less social than we should be, and that we're now incapable of carrying a conversation with someone who doesn't have similar interests to us.

.....................How the **** do you hold a long conversation with someone who doesn't share any interests with you?

As for me I've chosen to stay mostly quiet and mysterious but open up only to the two interns who are big nerds (if not bigger) than I am. Even then my full interests are not fully disclosed, namely the fact that I still watch a show that was designed to sell toys to little girls.

Let me ask...

...This is really all about just a couple of individuals who don't really understand the words they're using and simply pick on your friend because he has different interests, isn't it?

Not society, not "everybody else", just a couple of idiot bullies.

I guess so.

I've heard that it's not unusual for americans to value sociality above everything else, including stuff like health and education.
You know, to the point where being shy is seen as a disease and whatnot.

These are, of course, just generalizations. I'm not saying that every american is bound to be like that.

I suppose it's not all that different when it comes to teenagers all around the world, but I fully understand something like that when you're growing up and trying to form your own social identity.
When you're an adult though, not so much.

It's a bit insane in America though.

A kid who was seen in good standing around other kids told the principle I payed him to steal Test answers...... That they found in his locker five days after the test.

And when I told the principle I didn't do it she said,

"Do you really think our school's quarterback would lie to me like that?"

Names are censored because they are names. Do you mean after or before she said that? I'll just put both

"Hey Mrs. ***********, what am I in here for? *she says reason* what? When did **** tell you this? *she tells me about the locker search* And you believe he got it for me even though it was in his locker... Why?

"******, do you really think our school's quarterback would lie to me like that?"
