Went to check my island and I got an error message telling me that there was a mismatch between game time and expected time and to fix my system clock. Then the app closed.

I don't time travel. Even when I do physically travel to different time zones, I never bother to change the time on my iPad.

I waited a few minutes, tried again, and it started up normally. So really no big deal, but I was quite surprised by the message. Given how much people talk about TT on this forum, I'm surprised I haven't read anything about a message like this before.

The only thing I did unusual this morning was play offline for a while, but I had checked the island online between then and the error.

Have others seen this message?

I'm wondering if it is an indication that they are spending resources trying to preventing time traveling in the game, as opposed to developing new content. (Or, of course, simply having abandoned the game - but I still have hope)

That sounds like the typical message you get if you change the time on your phone and launch the game without putting it in airplane mode. If you didn't change the time, then it seems odd. Since you were eventually able to get the game up, it may have just been some kind of communication issue.

I did see that same error a few times when they first started checking for time travel. I was always able to start the game up on the second or third try. I think it's just a matter of how frequently your system clock gets updated and if, for some reason, it hasn't done so in a while, it could be off by a minute and will conflict with the server time. No big deal.
