In the first and second, he had development. And those were the better ones. The third had no character development, unless you count as "eventually liking someone" as character development, which it isn't, it's a "character arc" which is just the status of the character as the story unfolds. Character development usually involves showing that there is more to this character than meets the eye, you begin to understand why they are the way they are, ect, ect.

Planescape: Torment's story is more of a character study of The Nameless One, the game is about discovering why The Nameless One is immortal, what the character, Dhall, meant when he said "I don't know you as much as you don't know yourself.", the significance of Dieonarra, etc, etc and that's only in the first 5 minutes. Spoony put it aptly when he said "On the surface you have a concept that is ridiculous, if not completely broken, and from there you tell one of the most heartrenching and dramatic stories ever told in a computer game."

The simple fact is, Shrek cannot hope to hold a candle to The Nameless One in terms of his writing.

This is still a fun topic.
