Can someone give me some information on the elemental symbols that appear next to the skylanders' names when you put them on the portal? Like, how do they change and why? Thanks.

I think you guys mis understood me...What I mean is that when you put a skylander on the portal and they say their catchphrase, there are two of the elemental symbols, one on each side of their name. Their appearance changes sometimes, and I wanted to know how/why. For example, when you max out a skylander, a ring around the symbol appears with a solid color background.

Oh, you're wondering about the quest ranks. Every time you complete three quests, the symbol gets an upgraded ring.

Damn, someone caught on before I could answer, LOL!
Yeah, the elements THEMSELVES never change - So when you put Tree Rex on, he'll always show the 3-leaf Life symbol - but the appearance of it will change with different borders depending on how many quests that character - Tree Rex in this case - has completed: 0-2 quests: No ring/border 3-5 quests: Simple Bronze border (also unlocks the Bronze Top Hat) 6-8 quests: Slightly decorative Silver border (also unlocks the Silver Top Hat) All 9 quests: Most decorative Gold border (also unlocks the Gold Top Hat) These levels also match what rank the game tells you when you enter the Quests menu in the Character Info screen, where it will again show the elemental symbol with the same border.

Ah, okay, thanks. Follow up question: how can you view the quests, and what exactly are some of the quests?

A little more generic but more descriptive:
1) Press the opposite-Start button on your controller, the mirror to the button you press to Pause the game. On some systems it's Back or Select, on Wii it's the [-] 2) You'll see your character standing there on the left side, next to commands to manage him (like Stats and Hats). This is the Character Info screen. Choose Quests 3) It will show the Elemental icon, as well as listing his rank, as well as how many quests to reach the next rank 4) Press Primary Attack (A on the XBox, whatever the first attack button is) to dismiss this screen, it will show what button on the bottom 5) Now you'll have a screen of 9 icons. Faded means you have not completed that quest yet, gold means you have 6) Scroll through the icons to see a description of each, along with what your progress is. The grid shows as two rows of four icons, then one icon alone on the right. The right bunch, 2 rows of 3, are the same for everybody. The last on each row is specific to the element, the alone one is specific to the character (i.e. Hex's is different than Chop Chop, despite them both being Undead).
