I don't think any of us could have predicted this...

16 new characters (256 combinations through swapping)
A new portal (new figures are not compatible with older portals)
Swappable parts/weapons through the use of magnets (switch the top half of one figure with the bottom of another.)
JUMPING!
Fall 2013

More pics including the new portal design over at Kotaku

I noticed that too... curious.

Also, I just noticed that ALL of the new figures shown in the pics are all around the size of Crusher... new giants or is this the standard size going forward?

"Alongside those Swap Force figures will be 16 new "core" Skylanders, 16 returning characters from older games and eight new "LightCore" figures."

So, 16 Swap Force figures, 16 new characters, 16 reposed and 8 LightCores.

Pretty sure. Its on a couple of major news sites. I don't understand where or why it was announced in the middle of the night right before a special event (NYC Toys r Us) or Toy Fair.

"Skylanders Swap Force will launch on the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, Wii and 3DS. The Wii version is being developed by Beenox, while the 3DS version is coming from n-Space."

Thrilled to see n-Space coming back on the 3DS version - loved what they did with Giants. Beenox? Must research... Though, I can only assume the Wii version will be a downgraded port of the Wii U version, so that probably won't matter much.

Such a very interesting concept. The swappable parts sound neat and everything; but I highly doubt that I would personally utilize it. I'd much prefer to play with the Skylander as is, without swapping parts. And I'm glad that they finally gave that dated graphics engine a much needed overhaul! I'm also curious as to how they will implement the jumping mechanics into the game as well. Over all, you have my interest Vicarious Visions! smilie

Not too bad, really. Not counting all the reskinned characters, in Giants, we had 8 Giants, 8 LightCore, 24 Reposes and 8 New Characters - 48.
Here, we've got 16 SWAP Force, 16 Reposes, 16 New and 8 LightCore - 56. Only eight more. The jump from SSA to Giants was 14 (again, not counting reskins).

Story plot from official Activision site: http://investor.activision.com...eleaseID=737809

Portal Masters embark on an all-new adventure in the mysterious Cloudbreak Islands, home to a mystical volcano that erupts every hundred years to replenish the magic in Skylands. During an epic battle, a brave group of Skylanders were caught in the volcano's eruption, which blasted them apart and sent them to earth. But, the magic of the volcano gave these heroes a remarkable new power -- the ability to swap halves -- turning them into a special team known as the SWAP Force. Meanwhile, Kaos is back with a new evil plan. And now, Portal Masters everywhere must reassemble the SWAP Force -- in their original form or in new combinations -- and send them back to Cloudbreak to save Skylands!

What happened to the character design? Both Washbuckler and Blast Zone do not look like Skylanders to me.

Also Vicarious Visions, mastering the art of jumping in a video game, since 2011.

Haha, Skylanders is now the new Call of Duty, whereby a different developer works on each years version of the game. I can see Toys or Bob being Infinity Ward and sticking very close to story whereas Vicarious Vision are like Treyarch and are all about changing it up. It will be interesting to see whether jumping makes it into Skylanders 4, I'd say no.

Also I wonder how much those Swap Force characters will be. I'd say £15 or whatever the price of a Giant is in your country. Pretty expensive considering there's 16 of them.

Edit: Oh and it was announced overnight because the NDA would have been lifted today as the game will be announced later on today. Expect to see a none gameplay trailer at some point.

Definitely 16 Swap Force as 16x16=256 which is the number they keep throwing around for the number of combinations you can make.

GeekDad to the rescue!

Quote:
This is a new game from a new developer with a new portal peripheral and 42 new figures. (!!!!)

Skylanders Swap Force introduces innovations this year that create different ways to play with the physical toys as well as new ways to play in-game. The 16 Swap Force characters have interchangeable torsos and legs that can be snapped together to create your own custom Skylanders. If you owned all the figures that would be 256 combinations.

Here are the headlines about Skylanders Swap Force:

  • 16 Swap Force Skylanders including Magna-Charge (Tech), Wash-Buckler (Water) and Blast-Zone (Fire).
  • 16 new core Skylanders including Rollerbrawl (Undead) and Countdown (Fire).
  • 16 Series 3 Returning Skylanders including Eruptor and Stealth Elf.
  • 8 new Lightcore Skylanders.
  • 8 new Swap Force areas, equivalent of Elemental Zones but with more varied play. (ADVENTURE PACKS?)
  • 1 new Portal.

The bad news in that list is the requirement to buy a new portal. I asked Guha Bala, Studio Lead for Skylanders Swap Force, why we couldn’t use our existing portals for Swap Force.
“Our commitment is that every time we release there’s a new level of magic in both the toys and the game so we need to upgrade the portal which will support all the new and old toys.”

I was also a little surprised that, despite the introduction of jumping, there is still only two player local co-operative play — particularly when Disney Infinity has four player online. Bala explained his thinking here.
“The co-op play is local which reflects our demographic. What we find is that this is about children playing with each other rather than anonymous people online. This is very much a living room experience.”

This is certainly a good point. And with the Swap Force mechanic giving the physical toys a semi-articulated feel the possibilities for off-console play are much greater too. You can even attach two leg parts together to create your own comical Skylanders Swap Force mutants — although they won’t be recognized by the game.

It looks like the swappable have an insignia ay the base that the other figure don't making them easily identifiable also their names seem to conveniently separated to form new names upon swapping parts.

not sure where the 42 new figure number comes in the GeekDad article. My math skills keep giving me 56.

Also has anyone seen the supposedly confirmed new Eruptor?

It seems like an excessive number of figures, but if we're getting 16 Series 3, I assume all of those dropped for Giants will return. Although that just seems weird to me, for example, having a Series 3 Boomer, but no Series 2. I initially felt that Skylanders had jumped the shark when I heard the news (and saw Wash Buckler), but the other character designs in this thread have eased my mind some what.

EDIT: Just saw the post about it only being 42 figures. That's better. I assume the 8 lightcore will be split 4/4 between new Skylanders and Series 3 and that Series 3 will include some of the regular Skylanders from Giants.

The Family Gamer video said the top half of a switch force is their attacks, while the bottom half is movement. So maybe the insignia is a simple way to tell you how they'll move?

Thats pretty much what I took from it. The octopus can climb while the rocketman can use rockets.
I did read somewhere though that the Skylanders third attack is based on their base, which would be pretty cool as you could mix and match attacks.
