I would recommend Skylanders first.
I had Infinity and the entire first wave until a couple of weeks ago(I was one of the people incredibly hyped for this game pre-launch!), so I haven't actually played in a while and can't tell you exactly why and what things are good or bad with everything, so I apologise for that. I'll try to share my experience, nonetheless. I'm not really a big Disney fan either which definitely made me miss out on a lot of the magic so YMMV there.
I feel like Infinity lacks features that should be there: a lot of the toy box items feel like decoration more than anything, and many are based outside and few inside, and it just feels like there isn't as much customisation as there should be due to so many little things missing, you need to unlock items that should be available at the start for basic toy box building, the toy box sharing is pathetic because you don't even share, it's more like a contest where Disney pick the best to feature... There are sooo many missed oppurtunities, and that's hugely disappointing. Your items in the toy box are placed in a limited grid as well, which means that your race tracks will have to be built by piecing together already-made street curves and roads, and you can't customise the worlds as much as you should be able to from this. In the end, the toy box ends up feeling like something you'd use to whip up a quick map to explore, since with the limitations it's kind of frustrating to continually compromise if you want a bigger, more varied, more explorable map. There are muuuuch better sandboxes out there.
You see, in a normal game these wouldn't be issues quite as big. You know the saying, be happy with that which you have, not sad over that you do not. But Infinity has these toys and power discs to buy. And if you want 100% access to everything usable in the game, you will need every single character to unlock every chest and vault, and a lot of hex power discs to unlock toy box themes and mounts. Even with a full inventory, though, a number of the pieces still just feel like different versions of other stuff.
Here's the kicker... This would also be passable... Except that you have no connection with your figures. You can level them up(which also does nothing- it's just a useless stat), but if you do something as simple as change their ownership, they get reset too, so what's even the point in storing information on the figures that way? Why are these figures part of the game? Money. With no fleshed out integration with the game, figures feel pointless, so they just become keys. They add unnessicary expense and fat to a game which would be totally fine- better, even- without them included. Even the levelling, the only customisation on them, just feels like a grind. However, they are wonderfully crafted(though I hear the quality is beginning to drop- which would be a shame, as the first wave figures were unbelieveable quality. I'll admit, I liked Infinity more for the toy collecting than the game, even with little care for any of the characters on offer).
Infinity has a lot to look forward to and it clearly has a lot of love put into it. The art style is amazing. It has plenty of detail. The way that Infinity looks nails Disney style, and makes it feel like a toy box, in a wonderful fusion. Play set worlds are fun to explore mindlessly and there are hidden crevices all around them with hidden bonuses to find, that give you things to use in the toy box. The character figures look fantastic, with highly detailed molds and very solid paint work.
But there are also some, quite frankly, stupid decisions that may drag it down. If you want a more detailed building game, this isn't it. It's too expensive and requires too much time to even start unlocking things you'd want to play around with, which is sad because it is good as a quick, very basic world builder once you have stuff- still, it gets old fast even then. Character levelling is boring. The play sets are fun, but don't last too long a time, and get repetitive after a while since many missions in them are fetch quests, and they do get dull. The limitations in the toy box force you to compromise your visions on what you'd like to build far too often. The toys add nothing to the game besides extra expenses.
But if you like Disney or just want to spend for only some of the content? You aren't going to get anything close to the epic stuff trailers promise you, but I imagine you would at least get a kick from this game, if you're willing to look past numerous issues it has, if you already want to collect every toy just to have a cornucopia of Disney toys on your shelf. If you just want to buy a few extra things that interest you, you'll miss out quite a bit of cool items, but you won't get terrible play time logged in either and you won't miss out on a terrible lot of stuff. It's just a simple game trying to combine stuff in a fun way. It doesn't always succeed at what it does, but when it works, it works really well. Just beware about the expenses and the noticeable problems in the game. I think it's worth at least buying the starter pack on the cheap.
I'm not very interested in the game as it is now just because it has so many issues. I don't think tis worth the money right now. But it has so much potential to be an amazing series, and I'm interested in watching it, so I really hope that they can fix some problems with the game in future entries.
