What's your PS2 model? I think that not all PS2 models, especially those old, Fat models, support PSX.

I have an old fat model that plays PS1 games. All PS2 consoles should be compatible with PS1 games. So it may be a problem with your disk, is it damaged or scratched? Try cleaning it, if not then it could be something to do with your console. My PS2 once stopped playing certain games so I had to open it up and clean all the dust out of it, now it works fine.

Thank you for your answers!
Well I have a slimline PS2.
Both my PS2 and the disk are old (disk is scratched). Maybe thats the reason.

@dingodile: how to clean a PS2? I`m afraid of it, because I can corrupt the P2 during the cleaning...

I own the slim version of the PS2, and it works fine on my system. Maybe it's like dingodile555 said and the disc is dirty. Or maybe your system is dead. If that's the case, I think you can buy a new slim one pretty cheap in a store (if they still sell them where you live).

I think I read somewhere that PS3s can only run certain PS1/PS2 games, can you play all Spyro games on them?

Look for tutorials online which will give you a step-by-step guide. Basically you remove those rubber squares on the underside of the PS2, un-screw the lid and take it off. Then get some cleaning wipes and get rid of all the dust. I was surprised at how dirty it was in there.

^ cleaning the laser lens should do the trick. Its a quick solution to fix most of these writing problems.

I never even touched the laser lens. I thought that might be dangerous and unnecessary.

Well.. I've got a slimline PS2 and Spy works great. Right now, I'm looking at his -Game Over- screen. So, try cleaning out your Ps@ with a head-disc or cleaning the disc, my firend flushes her games in a toilet, it doesn't seem to work though, just thought I'd bring it up anyway.

If you have a pirate copy of the game, it won't work on PS2. Maybe yours is pirate?

From what I know, all PS3s can run all PS1 games, but only a select few PS3s can run PS2 games.

Same problem except i rented it my PS2 is an old fat one so im gonna try it at my schools slim PS2 also the disk is REALLY scratched up but i ended up stepping on my PS2 in anger and when i tried to attempt to copy the game onto my PC it statred acting up and froze so i might get a PS1 from gametraders with spyro the dragon or just get a new slim PS2 from Kmart and buy a copy at gametraders so i guess this is why you don't rent a game first released in 1998 from your local video shop well it looks like im gonna have to play the metroid prime trilogy that i also rented.

The fat PS2 is more likely than the slim to have issues with the CD laser. All PS1 games are CD format, while most PS2 games are DVD (there are, of course, exceptions). My fat PS2 has had trouble reading CDs for years, so I got a more stable slim. There are weird things you can try if you don't want to get a slim, but a slim is the best choice at this point if it is your CD laser that is the issue.

That's weird, because the newer ps2's always gave me more trouble with ps1 games. Strange...

PSX games work on the preowned original model PS2 I bought. The memory cards are good too. <.<

My fat PS2 can play PS1 games, but I play PS1 games on my PS1 because it adds to the nostalgia. Fat PS2's usually have problems with the DVD laser failing, so find a slimline PS2. BTW PS1 games cannot be saved on PS2 memory cards, but PS1 memory cards work in PS2's. Just FYI.

Well, PS1 games definitely play on the original hardware, and they also play on all PS2s, fat or slim. And all PS3s are capable of playing PS1 games, but only select models can play PS2 games. My guess is either your disc is bad or something's up with your system. Try playing it on a PS1, another PS2, or a PS3 and see what happens. If it won't play on any of the systems, it must be the disc. If it will play on most or all of the other systems you try, it must be the system. I wish you good luck on finding a replacement/getting a repair if either thing happens, though. If it's the disc, I think you could restore it somehow with whatever disc restoration service you have that'll ship to your country.

And to prevent confusion, I am in the U.S. and I am part Italian.
