They are obviously NOT dead for many reasons, one being the 'no trace of spyro in the death book' thing the other, (but very vauge) one being in ANB Ignitus was talking to spyro and they showed a picture of him perched and a rock staring out at the landscape as a big adult dragon so he must have lived.
