Playing Skylanders Imaginators with PS4 remote play

I saw on the box of the (PS4) starter pack that Skylanders Imaginators has remote play support, but when I try to connect I get stuck on the portal screen because I'm not near the portal so I can't put Skylanders on it. Did I missed something?

You can play the game just fine off the tv, but you still need to place Skylanders on the portal to play; it's not like the Switch version where you can just load characters into your save and call them up on demand.
