Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of the megahit Nickelodeon cartoon series “SpongeBob SquarePants,” died on Monday. He was 57.

The cause of death was ALS, which Hillenburg revealed he had been diagnosed with in March of last year.

“We are incredibly saddened by the news that Steve Hillenburg has passed away following a battle with ALS,” Nickelodeon said in a statement. “He was a beloved friend and long-time creative partner to everyone at Nickelodeon, and our hearts go out to his entire family. Steve imbued ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ with a unique sense of humor and innocence that has brought joy to generations of kids and families everywhere. His utterly original characters and the world of Bikini Bottom will long stand as a reminder of the value of optimism, friendship and the limitless power of imagination.”

Rest in peace to an amazing man who created something that's been special to me since the early years of my childhood. May his memory live on, and wishing his family/friends the best on this absolutely tragic day. smilie

smilie gotta thank this man. Without Spongebob, I couldn't explain who Tom Kenny is to anyone. Spyro would not be significant for his voice actor. Hillenburg is inspirational to me as a successful creator of cartoons, so I appreciate how he's an example that it is possible to make something that will affect and hopefully improve the lives of others.

Never got to watch Sponegebob much as a kid (my parents said it was "brain candy"), but I've usually enjoyed it when I have, so I appreciate this man and am sad to see that he left the world so early. At least he doesn't have to see the slow fallout of the destruction of our environment.

That's a shame, ALS is an awful way to go too. I hope his last moments were peaceful

R.I.P to the man who indirectly made me laugh countless times with a timeless show that I'm not ashamed to admit is my favorite cartoon of all time when you were at the helm.

It's unfortunate that Hillenburg and my grandpa on my mother's side both died on Monday this week...
