Greetings, and welcome to the All-Purpose Darksiders Topic!
[Topic is currently a work in progress, so please excuse the mess]

I know that this is probably an obscure series that next to nobody on here plays, and that this topic will probably die slowly, but eh, thought I'd try... *shrug*

- What is Darksiders? -

Darksiders is a series of action-adventure/hack and slash video games originally developed by Vigil Games and published by THQ (First two games), and later by Gunfire Games and THQ Nordic (Formerly Nordic Games) respectfully.
The later games (Mainly II, and to a lesser extent III) also incorporate RPG-like elements, such as weapon/equipment loot, in addition to a level/experience system, and are also more "open world". (Or, rather, open-ended)

The series' lore takes its inspiration from the Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse, with the player taking the role of the horsemen War (Darksiders), Death (Darksiders II), or Fury. (Darksiders III)

Other hack and slash series such as God of War, and to a lesser extent Devil May Cry, serve as the main inspiration to the series' overall combat. (Albeit a little bit less in III)
The games also draw heavily from The Legend of Zelda franchise in regards to gameplay (Generally) outside of combat, with things such as dungeons, puzzles, and items.

- What is Different in Darksiders III? -

Darksiders III downsizes heavily on the former games' Zelda-esque, RPG, and open world/open-ended elements in favor of a more "Metroidvania" (A mixture of Metroid and Castlevania-esque exploration) approach to its world.
Additionally, it also takes some inspiration from the Souls series (Such as Dark Souls III and Bloodborne) in regards to certain elements of its combat and overall gameplay.

III is also meant to be a bit harder than the first two games, while also not being as hard as what one can usually expect out of a Souls game, and overall still plays like what you'd expect out of a hack and slash series like Darksiders.
(In that it's still more similar to God of War, and, albeit to a lesser extent, Devil May Cry, than games like the ones found within the Souls series that the game takes some inspiration from)

I prefer the first game easily - didn't even get past the dwarven world in 2 - but I still love the artstyle and I want to see if the third game gets my attention again.

So far I've quite enjoyed the second game, but I will agree that the first game is better. I do love the artstyle as well, in addition to the mix of real-world and fantasy environments.

Some character designs fit both of them easily. Joe Madureira's inspiration is(was? I think he's not in 3) comics but wouldn't be surprised if he studied those games too.

Huh, maybe I should catch up.

First game is pretty great! Just don't get lost 100%ing it. The combat isn't deep enough to warrant going back and forth for some relics.

That art is really good. smilie It's unfortunate to see that it got wasted on what appears to be a less-than-stellar sequel, though. ;;

I've been playing Darksiders III recently since it was given out for free through PlayStation Plus this month, and so far I've surprisingly been really enjoying it. The combat is pretty solid, fun, and overall enjoyable.

It can be a bit hard to understand how the dodging mechanic works at first, and one will still probably mess up every now and then even after they've mastered it.
But once one has a decent understanding of it and its intricacies, it's quite rewarding. The different Hollows are also quite fun to use, both in combat and in the overworld.

Personally I'll say that I like this game more than Darksiders II, in all honesty.
I know that's an unpopular opinion, but my issue with Darksiders III was never that it "wasn't like Darksiders II" like it seemed to be with the majority of the fandom. Rather, my issue with III was how glitchy and clearly rushed the game was.

Don't get me wrong, I love Darksiders II quite a bit. But outside of the combat, I feel like the first game was more enjoyable to me personally.
Darksiders II had a ton of ideas that were great on paper, but the execution of most of those ideas was quite poor and it made the game feel unnecessarily bloated as a result.
(Basically, there is such a thing as "too much of a good thing")

Darksiders III feels a lot more like the first game overall, while also taking some elements from Darksiders II (Albeit toning them down) and throwing in a bit of its own unique flair into the mix.
Personally, for me, that's exactly what I wanted out of this game. smilie

That all said, however, the game is most certainly not perfect by any means. Two things I've found annoying so far pertain to loading times.
It takes forever for Fury to respawn after she dies on PS4, and there are also times where you'll be traversing the environment and the game will essentially freeze for a moment as it loads in more things because there are no proper loading screens.
(Which is really jarring to see when it happens, ngl)

There is also occasionally some weird visual glitch when you turn corners where you'll get some blue static, and some textures even up close might appear blurry for a bit.
Frame rate can also be inconsistent, though both that and the two previously mentioned visual issues don't bother me as much personally.
(Even though I still wish that they weren't a thing)

Overall, Darksiders III is a pretty damn solid game in my opinion, and is still worth a play if you like the series or hack and slashes in general. It's no Devil May Cry 5 or God of War 2018, but it's still fun. smilie
