Random free driving?

I am planning to get SC soon, but I wanna know if you can drive your vehicle anywhere, or if you have to do it in certain spots.

There are certain sections of the game where you can use your vehicle. You can't use it all the time. The game will make it abundantly clear when it's vehicle time and when it's just normal Skylanders gameplay time.
