I know his ability still works in the game but if you use his soul gem do you get the chest in the puzzle too?

Haven't tried it, but don't think so.
It didn't gave you the gold when using it in previous games, after all, right?

You do not get it but since you only get the chest once anyway you can use him for following playthroughs and save some time.
