Tips on Grind Challenges

I'm struggling on the grind challenges. Got any advice

hold they joystick in the direction you want to go a few seconds before you reach the imagainaite, then jump over.

One additional tip...
Be careful about jumping too soon. If you try to hold to one side and jump before the end of the rail you're jumping to is close enough you will jump up instead of to the side. By then you will have missed the point where you could actually jump to get the token.
I did this about 5 or 6 times in the golden casino (the token after the 3 cable cars) until I realized what I was doing wrong.
