im just wondering... was this just a prototype or was it actually released?...

The third grenade is not present on any of the figures, though his hand is shaped like it's still grabbing one, so it's obvious that it was supposed to be there at some point. It could have been removed because it was too close to the torso, so it might've caused problems with figure production.

Phoenix Crystal is the best unreleased Crystal.
Skylanders Academy Season 2 was an improvement.
I don't know what to think of Skylanders' future.

the grenade pin is also missing from his mouth.. cost reductions?

Definitely cost reductions, Count. It's the same mold as the Easter version. Also in the top image, there's suppose to have a belt of extra grenades on his body.
