If you're not a collector or a fan of nintendo characters, then they may not appeal to you. I, myself am a collector of figurines and enjoy video games so meshing both of those properties together just seemed right for me. A skylander or amiibo figurine is always of a high quality and when you compare it to other figurines, the quality is the same and are the same price and they function in the game. There's a video that I always recommend people to watch when they don't understand the craze, I've linked it below. I hope that this has opened your mind a bit to the growing popularity of these 'toys to life' figurines.

More or less. Skylanders was also made with the idea of being toys along with games, which toys appeal to kids even without the game aspect.

Disney Infinity, Amiibo, and Lego Dimensions are trying to take a slice of the profits Skylanders has achieved and have done rather well for themselves. However these toys (particularly Amiibo) have extra brownie points in that they're figures of characters from people's childhoods, and in some cases rarely ever get any merch if any at all (see: ROB, Shulk, Dr Mario). Compared to Skylanders which has largely been original characters.

Money. Every game is made because of that. Every piece of media is made because of that, even MLP. The love comes from people working ON it,but the idea comes because they need to sell something. Trying to climb on a metaphorical soapbox saying it's wrong because it's toys isn't really going to work after 5 years of the fad.

Also while I'm not very sure of Infinity and Dimensions only has one game right now, there should at least be something to be said how Skylanders and Amiibo from the past can still work on games that came out and will come out years after them. It would be really easy for them to not allow backwards compatibility and force you to buy new toys instead to further increase profits.

Though Skylanders does try to encourage that by having a new gimmick each installment.

They encourage but interviews said they always make a point to keep compabilibity going as far back as possible. Heck, I only have the digital version of Superchargers, only using my older collection while it's too expensive to import, having tons of fun.

There's a $20 adapter for the older 3DS.

Nintendo also has a compatibility chart that expains which amiibo work with which games. On 3DS for the most part Smash Bros (works with vast majority of amiibo) and Codename STEAM (works with all Fire Emblem amiibo) have the best uses of the figures. If you don't have an interest in those games or what the amiibo do in them (you can google that), then you can safely pass on the fad.

Skylanders originally was going to be "Spyro's Kingdom" and Spyro would just be a non-playable NPC.
Obviously that's not how it turned out, but I like Skylanders, and with a new gimmick each year, and the Skymiibos, they really know how to make lots of money. That along with Skylanders being a really fun game.
I appreciate both Skylanders and Amiibo's, and I know you can say it's just a cash-grab, but isn't everything? They're very good at it too, over $1000 of my money has went to toys-to-life, but Disney Infinity looks like the most blatant "cash-grab". I don't get the huge appeal of it, it looks really boring, the combat is slow and repetitive, and what innovative or original things has it brought? Disney, Star Wars, and Marvel in the same game? That's hardly enough to make me want it.
I mean, I do agree with it, but anything that ever gets extremely popular and makes lots of money always gets referred to as a cash cow or something.
