There is absolutely no acceptable evidence supporting this.

Places like Smashboards and GAF took polls, but their samples were tiny, and those places have a bias towards certain characters as is.

The actual ballot is likely going to have votes in the hundred thousands, if not millions, considering the player base for Smash. A few small internet communities means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

King K. Rool was more prominent in the DK series than Meta Knight was in the Kirby series leading up to Brawl (conveniently, the only main series games that Meta Knight appeared in until then were games that Sakurai made...), yet Meta Knight was the one who got added and that's probably what led to Meta Knight's boost in prominence in the Kirby series since then. King K. Rool deserves at least as much as what Meta Knight got.

Ganondorf hasn't appeared in a main series Zelda game since Twilight Princess (2006) I'm pretty sure.
