Saddest Moment You've Seen In Fiction [CLOSED]

What is the saddest thing you've seen in fiction? Any form- television, literature, video games, what have you.

I don't know if this is the definitive saddest thing I've seen, but this from Fullmetal Alchemist is definitely the saddest thing I've seen recently:

oh man i just read the manga this past month and just started watching brotherhood today and i'm actually crying its so sad

Yeah that FMA scene is a real downer.

For me (various anime/movie/game spoilers ahead):

-Rosalina's Storybook in Super Mario Galaxy
-Shirley's Death in Code Geass
-Japanese Sonic X Season 3 ending
-Lockon's Death in Gundam 00
-The ending of Inside I'm Dancing/Rory Was Here
-Suzuha's failure/"death" in Steins;Gate
-Sosuke's deterioration and depression throughout the latter half of Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid
-"Kenny Dies" and "You're Getting Old" episodes of South Park

All that comes to mind for now.

Spoilers for a bunch of anime and jrpgs. Cause I'm a weeb.
-The finale of Death Parade. I was literally sobbing watching that dear god.
-The entire last 3 chapters of Super Dangan Ronpa 2, but especially Nanami. ;_; My daughter why.
-Akinari's death in Persona 3. That social link made me cry more than the actual ending did.
-Natsume being adopted by the Fujiwaras, in Natsume's Book of Friends. Tho "sad" probably isn't the best way to describe it, it still made me cry buckets.
-NATSUME CRYING ON THE PORCH OF HIS DEAD PARENTS' HOUSE.
-Just Natsume crying in general. If he's crying, I'm crying.

Yeah that FMA one definitely comes to mind as one of the saddest moments. I find that it was even worse in the original version than Brotherhood. Other than that, other ones I found sad would be:

  1. Bluestar's life in Bluestar's Prophecy was really sad. There were heaps of times I cried reading this book. The main one that comes to mind is Bluestar giving up her kits to Oakheart, and one of them dying along the way. That entire scene was really well done and really got to me, and no other fictional book so far has left me quite emotional. The Erins really put their heart and soul into Bluestar's Prophecy, and it's a shame they're no longer doing that.
  2. Kurou's death in Okamiden was really awful to me. It's literally the first death in fiction that I feel shouldn't stick. He didn't deserve that death at all and I was really upset when it happened (like, literally crying).
  3. L's death in Death Note. And then Light laughing at his grave. Light's death was pretty sad too.
  4. Vriska's death at the end of Act 5 in Homestuck was very sad when it first happened. It may have lost it's meaning now, but it was still sad when it happened.
  5. Pretty much everything that happens to Dorian at the end of the book Heir of Fire.

there's probably more, but i can't think of them at the moment.

Regarding FMA,
I thought that scene was sad, but honestly I found Maes Hughes's death a lot worse. His death was unexpected, especially for such a likable character. I actually cried during that scene in Brotherhood.

Some other ones are:
-The ending to The Book Thief. Part of me can't believe that the author would kill off Liesel's parents and best friend like that, but at the same time i wasn't too surprised, considering this is set in World War II.
-Stoick's death in How to Train Your Dragon 2 was unexpected but nonetheless really sad.
-The ending to the Walking Dead video game. Lee's death is so sad and I cry ever single time I play it. same for TWD: Season 2 video game's ending.

Just want to point out that
There's next to zero chance that Jon Snow is actually going to be dead come The Winds of Winter, just like there's next to zero chance that Daenerys is going to be killed by Jhaqo. They're too important to kill off before the final book.

I've been watching a Kingdom Hearts II playthrough, and I forgot how sad...well...EVERYTHING to do with Roxas is.

Like holy crap, this guy has it HARD. They truly made him the polar opposite of Sora.

Even out of context it still comes of as really sad because this is a guy who literally has everyone tell him "you're a Nobody" or "you were never supposed to exist" at every turn. Yes, there are special in-universe connotations there, but they arguably make things sadder, and even without that context, those phrases would still be HORRIBLE things to say to someone IRL.

Video games.
Psychonauts, like, the entire game. I mean, it's game where you literally dive into the minds of the characters. To name a few, Milla's story, Sasha's story all the way down to tiny little side stories like Clem and Crystal's. My personal favorite is the story of Gloria Von Guton, who is bipolar because her mother's death.

This game has a very sad tone in general.

The endings of Pokemon Blue/Red Rescue Team and Explores of Sky/Darkness/Time were really sad, yet also great endings.

Also the partner leaving you in Blue/Red Rescue Team after completing the main story-line hit me hard to the point I really struggled to continue the post-storyline. I got too emotionally invested in the partner and the character I was playing as. Doesn't help that I was a lot younger when I first played it.

After beating Undertale, there was a certain character's story which was really sad:
Asriel's entire story. He makes friends with a human called Chara, who is actually a sociopath and a murderer. The human and Asriel both end up dying. Then after his death his 'dust' (which I believe is monster's equivalent of blood) gets absorbed into flowers which one of them gets injected with Determination. So Asriel comes back to life as a flower called Flowey with the mind of Asriel but no soul, and hence he's not able to feel emotions, and he doesn't get help from anyone and his parents don't even know of his existence. And after learning the ability of saves and resets and learning that if he dies he no longer exists due to not having a soul he eventually gets driven to insanity and becomes a sociopath and the main villain of the game. The final fight with him in the true pacifist run nearly had me in tears since he had his reasons for fighting you and he just wanted to have a better life and ends up breaking down at the end off the fight. And in the end, you could save everyone else except him, who needed saving the most.

I mean, I thought that Kurow from Okamiden had it bad and I thought his ending was complete bull****, but Asriel has it worse since death is better than rotting away as a flower forever and being left behind, and there's a chance that Kurow is happily in the Celestial Plain with Chibi, Ammy and Waka anyway (I admit it's more of a headcanon and me in denial, but I don't see why that can't happen).

Then there's also the fact that Sans is aware of the timelines and resets. So he's aware that after you beat the game, you would probably reset to play the game again and hence he would live out the events of Undertale over and over. This reason alone makes me not want to replay Undertale too many times despite it having a really high replay value.

Then there's the ending of the prologue in The Last of Us. It didn't make me cry like Okamiden did, but I was really freaking close to it.

Well the saddest thing *I* have seen in fiction, is in my own book (coming out very soon), but I am unsure if that really counts. Nonetheless, I've seen it, and it is fiction. lol. I do think maybe readers won't find what I am talking about as sad as I did, since I wrote it. Writing sad scenes for characters you love about can really be emotional sometimes.

Uh... for something everyone else has scene? I'm unsure, there's so many. The Road, The Leftovers, and The Last of Us (ironically all are alike) have all left me very emotional. Won't even speak of specific scenes since the entire things, I found extremely depressing and sad.

I don't play/watch too many things with sad things in them, but that sort of changed with Undertale.

Undertale spoilers obviously:

Asriel. Just when you find out that he is Flowey and that he's forever stuck in this emotionless and uncaring state as a flower is pretty sad.

And after his boss fight after you talk, he just slowly walks away into the void after telling you to go be with your friends.

Poor Asriel. :C

oh and leaving Toriel the first time is always pretty sad too if that counts.

I've never really truly felt really sad after watching anything fictional, other than the fact that I almost cried when
Bond's wife Tracy dies in the ending of On Her Majesty's Secret Service :'^(

The movie as a whole was already amazing, and it really hits you with all the build up to their relationship earlier in the movie.
