January has a bad record of being the month where the worst of the worst movies come out in theaters(save the oscar-worthy movies that don't get released publicly until then, which even then doesn't happen that often). If Abrams released it in January, it would pretty much be a sign that nobody working on this film has any hope in it.

Plus December tends to be the biggest month for movies not released in the summer in terms of box-office numbers. Why they didn't release it in the summer is beyond me though.

I thought the reason Luke saw them was because not only was he strong with the force but also because he was close to them personally and that they shouldn't really be visible by anyone else, even someone else with strong ties to the force. Maybe someone who is extremely close to Luke might catch a glimpse of them?

Yoda, Obi wan, and Anakin were three of the most powerful Jedi's, they'd be able to talk to Luke's son.

After watching the trailer again I retract most of what I said.
It's definitely Luke talking at the start, to his son is the obvious assumption. I do still think (P obvious actually) That the stormtrooper will be brought to the Rebel Alliance after realizing what this new Sith Lord has in store. I really don't want Leia to have a lightsaber...If it's like, she needs to use it to save her life cuz Luke left it with her or some **** then cool, but Leia shouldn't fight with a Lightsaber. I do still want Dagobah, so extremely bad. And obviously the dude with the metal hand is Luke, I love that, and I love that he still has R2, like it shows he still has a friend in this world even if he's in isolation (Something I assume because he's old and one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful Jedi around. And he wanted peace and quiet like Master Yoda.

It's not releasing on Christmas though. It's the period of time, but it may make lots of ticket sales on Christmas Day, as it's release day is December 18th.
