with this Japanese sword, the grip will be the same length as the blade and the rain-guard will be in the center of the sword. i'm not to sure if it's a sword with a very long grip, or a spear with a very long blade :/
never the less i need a strong blade because the the new grip will put way for force in a swing.
also i really the folded metal look. after i build this sword, it will stand around 6 feet tall :3
They do exist, and they're called "Nagamaki".
They also did attach really long handles on the fresh katana blades when they tested them on the dead bodies of prisoners. This, as you said, gave them a lot more extra force, since they were just trying to test the blade and not the sword itself.
If you've ever heard stories of katanas slicing people in half, there's your most likely source.
Katanas also weren't that great when it came to swords. They didn't use them in combat much, and they were mostly symbols of office. One can tell because during the 900 years in which they used katanas, their design didn't change pretty much at all. Usually when a certain type of weapon is used in battle it's design changes according to new innovations in armor and fighting styles.
Katanas were also pretty heavy, so they required two hands to use in combat. This is mostly attributed to the fact that the blades were quite short and fat, as the Japanese didn't have access to high quality materials and they had to be made durable. This made them pretty ineffective in armor piercing. The stabbing point was also pretty poor. Put simply, katanas were effectively just short, two-handed sabres.
Okay, I'm rambling again. If you really want a katana, ignore me and buy one, it's your choice.
