Well, the game is based off of the legend Icarus, and when Icarus's wings burnt up, he fell into the water
...And never returned.

This is also supported by the slight worry that was shown by Pit when they had to go underwater, well, he didnt end up actually touching water, but you know what I mean.

Concluding all of this, Pit must have drowned when he was human and then went to Skyworld, and so on.

But then again, its just a theory a game-*Shot*

Pit was bullied at school and some kid shoved his head in the toilet and forgot to let him up to breathe. Kid was arrested.

I've been wondering about this for quite some time, actually. ^.^ In my little head, the angels of Kid Icarus are revived humans. Pit is indeed a revived Icarus in my story. Dark Pit's an exception since he was created through the Mirror of Truth.
What about Shadmé, you ask?

What if Pit ecxuly comitted suicide as a human? He's 13[sorta] afterall...

I believe that gods and goddesses have the power to revive humans into angels through some sort of spell/ceremony, known only by a few. It drains a lot of energy, which is why angels aren't created every two seconds, and also can only be used on the most pure hearted, or for other reasons. Once that happens, the angel is bonded to whoever revived them. Explains Pit's closeness to Palutena.
But that's just my thought. :3
