If A Levels are basically the same class, but for those that take the challenge and get better scores. I think it would Honors class here.

To be frank I'm having trouble understanding other country school systems myself.

But here it starts with:

  1. Preschool/Early childhood development- For those with mental disabilities/disabilities in general. You go there at the age of 3 and stay there for 2 years. Actually I been through it myself.
  2. Kindergarden - The school/Grade before 1st grade. They teach you some of the basics.
  3. Elementary school - Though some have different grades in some of the schools, like they might add/subtract a few grades, but the average is 1-5 grade.
  4. Middle School/Junior high - Which are usually 6-8 Grades, basically the basics of the more complicated things, and somewhat of the high school experience.
  5. High School - 9 - 12 grade schools. The experience of people on their cell phones and talking about driving.
  6. College - Basically an optional school that people in high school will wedge down your throat. Hell half of the things don't really land you a job at all.

In the UK we also have it categorised into 'Key Stages' as well. Fun fun fun.

Nursery / Foundation Stage 1 as they now call it (optional, age 3-4)

Primary School
Reception / Foundation Stage 2 (age 4-5)
Key Stage 1 / Years 1-2 (age 5-7)
Key Stage 2 / Years 3-6 (age 7-11)

Secondary School
Key Stage 3 / Years 7-9 (age 11-14)
Key Stage 4 / Years 10-11 (age 14-16) at which point you do your GCSEs

Then you could leave school or do A Levels (a.k.a. Key Stage 5, Sixth Form, age 16-18, years 12-13) in preparation for University. Or go to college. Or just leave and get a job and be free from the education system.

So now if you ever need to write a story set in the UK or anything you are all experts.

Question for you, CF.

For Universities, what does International Foundation Course mean? Does international stand for every country outside of EU, or every country outside of UK? And what is this foundation thing anyway? I see it has absolutely no requirements to sign up for it except you have to pay 9000 pounds. Is it something like a preparation for undergraduate thing, and do I even need it for undergraduate course?

How do you even pay those 9000 pounds? Do you guys have those government stuff where you get loans and they pay it all for you, but over time you pay it back?
Cynderfyre Emerald Sparx Gems: 3813
#2333 Posted: 14:32:36 05/08/2014
Hmm... I don't know much about that. Obviously being a UK native I haven't been told about stuff like that. As far as I can tell it's everyone outside the UK, though. Have you searched what different universities say about it on their websites? Even ones you don't plan to apply to could give you an indication.

E.g. London (the school of Economics and Finance and Politics but that doesn't matter):
Quote:
The University of London International Foundation Programme is a challenging and inspiring new programme that has been designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge to prepare you for rigorous undergraduate study. The programme is equivalent in standard to qualifications studied in year 13 in a UK school (e.g. ‘A’ levels).

Durham:
Quote:
  • A one year programme designed to help international students access UK Higher Education
  • Not linked to specific Durham degree programmes, but students will be helped to apply through UCAS to join degree programmes at Durham or other UK Higher Education Institutions
  • Offers extra English language and study skills support specially designed for international students who do not meet the requirements for direct entry to either UK higher education or the Direct Progression Programmes offered by the Foundation Centre
  • Suitable for international students who wish to study a degree subject not offered by Durham University, or are not yet sure which degree subject they wish to study.

...The Foundation Centre seeks to develop the practical and intellectual skills sought by employers and offers preparation for a range of undergraduate degrees, each with their own career prospects. We do this by offering a high level of academic content and extensive pastoral support.

Bristol:
Quote:
The International Foundation Programme (IFP) is designed to prepare you for undergraduate study in the UK. You will improve your subject knowledge through attendance at lectures and seminars in your chosen subject area in the University Schools and Departments. In addition, you will also study in the Centre for English Language and Foundation Studies (CELFS). Here you will:
  • Develop your knowledge and use of academic grammar and vocabulary
  • Improve your general academic skills of taking notes from lectures
  • Learn to deal with academic reading texts
  • Improve your writing skills through working on academic writing tasks and essays throughout the year
  • Learn to participate confidently in academic discussions and seminars and to give successful presentations
  • You will also receive extensive support in applying through UCAS for undergraduate courses at the University of Bristol and other universities. You will leave the IFP fully equipped with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and confidence to succeed at a top university in the UK.

Middlesex:
Quote:
Is the IFP the right course for me?
If you answer 'yes' to these three questions, then the IFP would be the perfect course to prepare you for study at Middlesex:

  • Do you have an intermediate to advanced level of English?
  • Have you completed secondary school with good grades?
  • Would you like to improve your study skills further to meet the entry requirements for undergraduate degrees at Middlesex?

What are the aims of the IFP?
  • Improve your general level of English and develop the specific academic language skills that you will need for undergraduate study
  • Give you opportunities to learn and practice the study and subject skills you need for your degree programme
  • Orientate you with university life and help you become familiar with the culture of Middlesex and UK higher education
  • Build confidence and prepare you for independent learning, an important feature of the British university system
  • Give you automatic progression onto a range of Middlesex degree courses upon successful completion of the course.

Sorry if that's information overload, it's all I could find. Basically, it seems to be a sort of replacement A level course, for people who have come from abroad and thus not done A levels (which are supposed to prepare you for university study). Things like maths and English seem to be compulsory and "key skills" (I've no idea what that means. Study skills or something?)

Yep, you take out tuition loans to pay for your university education (this included I presume?) then you spend years in debt. But you don't have to start paying it back until you're earning over £21,000 a year.
Handy clear website about student loans here.
Quote:
English or EU full-time or part-time students can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan.

The loan is paid directly to your university or college. You have to pay it back.

I sorta knew those stuff, however, A-levels really confuse me.

What are these A-levels? Is that like a final exam at the end of high school that includes everything you've learnt in there? Is there such a thing as B-levels? Because over here, you can take A level in Math, Croatian and English, which is more difficult, or B level that is not as difficult, but then you can get whatever grade ranging from A to D from the test, regardless of the level.

Do I absolutely must have those A levels to get into the undergraduate course?

I think I'll probably have to go for foundation because again, our system is different. But then again, if I go for foundation, do I have to have any knowledge about that course? Let's say the foundation is programming, yet I have never even looked at computer screen. Could I still apply for it?

And thanks for the link. I think C_f sent me the same thing, though at a time it was very confusing and the form I have to fill in is huge. 20 pages. Kerry also sent me something that was in Scotland, but my grades just don't qualify.

Quote:
You have to pay back loans but you don’t need to pay back grants.

What are these grants? derp. sorry. lots of questions.

A levels are "Advanced Levels" and if you're a UK native they're pretty much necessary for university far as I'm aware. They're optional following the compulsory GCSEs, but if you want to go to uni, you would take them, although I think maybe you could also go to a specialist college for your chosen subject during the time you would be taking A-levels instead, but I'm not sure... And you only take 3-5 subjects e.g. you could choose to do Art, Maths, Biology, History or something like that. But you'd obviously make them fairly relevant to your intended career choice.

You tend to do them from age 16-18 over two years (you tend to just stay in your school or another school, and its free). If you don't have A-levels because of where you come from then that's probably where things like that course come in. Have you checked what requirements the universities you might want to go to are asking for? They might say something about people coming from outside the UK somewhere.

There's no such thing as B levels here, as far as I'm aware! As for the foundation thing, are you referring to the International Foundation Course again? I know very little about it really but I guess it would depend on what and how well you did back at your old school?

Oh yeah, now I get it. Kerry also told me about it but I guess I just forgot the name. And yeah, we don't have such thing as A-levels here.

I went to INTO University of Gloucestershire, and there they said there are no requirements except of having 12 years of education, good grades and IELTS 4.0-4.5. I have mostly B's, so I guess that's considered good...?
As for international diploma, it says ''A-levels, foundation or first year of undergraduate degree.'', along with IELTS scored from 5.0-5.5

And yeah, I'm talking about International stuff still. I'm just worried because I'm at economic high school that has nothing to do with art or design, so I don't know would they consider it anyway. I have C's in Maths, B in Croatian (not like that matters), A's in English and B~A in I.T. So, derp...

With those B's and A's you should be fine. Especially the English- I mean, good language skills are useful in pretty much anything and especially considering it's not your first language, that will impress them I'm sure.

Another thing you could do maybe is email the department at the university and ask them a little? Explain your situation and ask them what sort of things they're looking for, and what you could do to get what they need if you have to? I don't know if that seems an odd thing to do but they might be able to suggest things, they might even appreciate that you're putting in the effort to find out?

Actually, I already did e-mail them last year, so I kinda feel stupid doing it again lol. They changed the site so yeah, I might do it again. They probably don't even remember me anymore anyway.

I really want to call them and ask personally, because it's so much quicker and easier, but it costs a lot... then I asked C_f can he call them for me and re-direct the call to me over Skype, but he said it's too much of a hassle and that someone might call him within those 5 minutes. Man he really pissed me off today with that. He always kills all my plans just because he can't be arsed...

But anyway, thank you for clearing these things out for me! I really appreciate it.

ok this was the most hilarious thing this year

I heard my dog was whining and jumping all over and I went out to see is it maybe a fox attacking her, but it turns out it was a cat. I went up to her to pet her, when I saw a kitten around my tree. I figured she was its mother so I took my dog's bowl and gave them some food (my dog did not approve lol). Then, I saw two more kittens hiding in mini corn field. I went aww and gave even more food... but then it got kinda serious.
I heard more meowing coming from my back yard, and a kitten fell off the tree and ran for food. Then another fell onto its butt off the tree and came, and finally, one more jumped off and they all ran here for food. 6 kittens bros and sis. 6 kittens.

After they were done, I tried to pet one. And when they saw I wasn't going to hurt them, they all went after me. My dad didn't want them around so I had to shoo them away, but now they're scattered all over my yard and occupying my poor dog's house. I went to open the front door to see if they were maybe gone, but then 3 more just rushed into my house and I had to get them out. XD

I went to open the front door to see if they were maybe gone, but then 3 more just rushed into my house and I had to get them out. smilie

ok this was the most hilarious thing this year

XD

The stages of my dad's reaction.

Mother cat:
''Well isn't she skinny... give her food.''

Kitten #1:
''I guess mating season is over..''

Kitten #2 and #3:
''Oh my god no. Why our yard. Gonna get the extra can of food..''

Kitten 4,5 and 6:
'' *comes back* ARE YOU ****ING WITH ME''
