I do understand. I agree that there are far more dubious cash frenzy ads out there.
As for the price he is asking for, $6.99 (Includes shipping) doesn't even cover the cost he spent including the Ebay/Paypal fees and the time/money to figure out how to make it Clear Green.

I agree, it's clearly listed as custom "opened and re-sealed".
I don't think there is any problem with this at all. It's pretty much what I did with my Eruptor http://www.flickr.com/photos/pyrofer/9519273968/ Only with a different resin and where I cast the base too, he just did the figure. I admire the quality of his figures and have sent him a message to see if he is willing to share how he did it Chop Chop's eyes look FUNKY. like a deep sea shrimp or something. Freaks me right out. |

I actually own the high bid on the custom chop chop right now. Didn't realize it was custom, but I'm ok with that. My max bid isn't ridiculous on that and I know a kid who would love that. And yes, it's on me for not reading the 'fine print'.
The ebay items that bother me are the one priced higher then retail when the item is readily available at retail. The seller is just preying on buyer ignorance, it seems. |

Pre-orders are one of the biggest scams currently on eBay ... and the saddest part is that it's totally allowed and legitimate per eBay policy, as long as the Seller makes it blatantly clear that the listing/auction is for a pre-order. Don't ever, ever bid on a pre-order auction. It's a ridiculous way to waste your money.

I find auctions for chip codes, etc, to be even more nefarious.
Oodles of money (in relative terms to the original cost) for a code which may not even win? But, unfortunately once again, allowed.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/pre-sale.html Basically you aren't supposed to list presale items if you can't guarantee you(the seller) has the item in-hand within 30 days of the end date. I think they are just hoping that you buy the preorder in desperation and forget to ask for a refund after the buyer protection window so they keep your money. Ebay should really police preorder listings better or just not allow them.

The thing that bothers me is that some employees are probably taking all the Purple eye brawls and pearl Hot Heads! I'm pretty sure the stores that people have found these had no idea what they were and how rare they are. If I found one I couldn't sell it, though I'm not against anyone selling one once they find them. It just gives people like us 0% chance of finding certain figure

While that does undoubtedly happen, Kartoonkid, it is definitely possible to find "chase variants" on the shelves at stores. It's just very, very rare. From this forum, we know that Matteomax found the "stone" variants of Zook and Whirlwind in a store once. Just recently, Portalflip found the "electric green" Scorp variant in a Target. I personally found the "electric green" Twin Blade Chop Chop at a Toys R Us last month. And another user just posted finding the Series 1 "gold" Flameslinger at a KMart recently, too. There's probably many other examples, as well.
The bottom line is that one has a tiny, miniscule chance of finding the "chase" variants in a store, regardless of how much integrity the store's employees have. It's easier to blame the store employees for the rarity of those figures, but the reality is that they are just plain rare. They wouldn't be called "chase" variants if they weren't something that had to be chased.

I have personally found 7 chase variants:
1 silver 2 gold 3 glow in the dark (two the same char) 1 crystal I do believe that it is harder now as store staff are more wise (I overheard one staff member in the chain store I found the 3 glows in state categorically that she would hide any other ones she found from then on as she discovered what they could be sold for on EBay). However, it does not stop me looking whenever I get the chance. Trouble is that I have not seen any evidence of green translucents at all, here in Oz.

I'm actually all for "rarity". I'm not one to wine that I can't find a rare figure or that it's unfair. It's so much more fun and meaningful if you happen upon a figure that only a handful of people have or will ever see, but I just think it ruins the fun, even by half of 1% knowing that this happens. But I love the thrill of the "chase"! On that note I was at a Walmart where all their Skylanders were kept in the toys section, they had like 10 or so boxes of the glow in the dark Sonic Booms! The weird thing is every box had been opened and taped back. They also had tons of other Skylanders that weren't in stock at a lot if local stores like wave two swappers and regular lightcore Grim Creeper. Not Super Rare stuff, but for a none super center Walmart with only 3 types of Disney Infinity Characters in stock I was pretty surprised.

I don't have too much of an issue with employees buying the chase variants themselves. Every job has it's perks. You could view it as activision tipping the retail employees, the same way they give exclusives to their own employees. And it also has the side effect of making retail employees more knowledgeable about the product, which should help sell products.
Sure, I'm not crazy about reducing my odds of finding a chase variant, but I don't expect someone to leave $100+ just to make some unappreciative customer and manager happy. Heck, it could even be the manager who's buying them up. |
