pyrofer, you should make a come back and release a final version of your app that has everything in it. i mean.. im almost positive you kept working on this for yourself and just stopped releasing the code cause ppl are jerks about everything.. but programming is an art like any other, bound to be some people who dont appreciate it or think its crap because they dont understand it.

Sadly the main reason I stopped was I didn't have the time.
I have had a lot of help from a couple of forum members who have done some great work in figuring (lol, pun not intended) some things out for the figures.
I have not, as yet, implemented it into the app. There is no secret "finished" version, I wish there was! I would however like to finish a few things in it.

If anybody is GREAT at coding and wants to help PM me.

Question about the tool:

By saving images you were able to have them appear in the program when viewing characters. Images had to be put in corresponding folders (ssa, giants, legendaries, etc). Is there a way to make other in game variants pictures appear? (ie. molten hot dog).

I'm not sure if I'm just not naming it correctly, or if you need a different folder, or if it's even built into the tool.

Some variants load from spImages and do show up. I can't remember the rules on which.
You will have to experiment with them. It should be obvious because the ones that load from there won't show up a normal image from the other folders.

Thank you! The version I had downloaded didn't have an spImages folder, so I didn't know that it was trying to load from there.

It's so great having this tool and being able to back up each of my characters as I finish them (just incase they break. I don't want all my hours of work to be for nothing). You mentioned theres some things you'd like to eventually finish up on them? I'm assuming this is things like the swap force quests? along with other bugs in the quest recording?

Yeah, the quests are a right pain due to the way they are stored.
I need to look at all the data I do have as there are apparently bugs in some bits.

If I get time I want to squash all the bugs and make he app reliable.
My hard disk crashed and my PC is dead at the moment smilie so until I get things re-installed I can't do anything.

It's a shame I can't include all the images but they are copyright Activision so no way I could distribute them.

If there was one decent source of all the images the app could possibly download them but no way to reliably do that if they move or change names so the image folders was the best I could legally do.

Not Hype. Bugs, what can I say? They bug me.
No promises, no schedules and no hints but I have been working when I get the odd minute on fixing a few things.
I know there is a memory leak in the portal code that crashes the app after running for a while or reading lots of figures. This is a pain to find and fix, but I hope to do so.
When I am happy I will release a "finished" version that should hopefully not crash and where the included features work as intended.

I had a couple people helping me with it, I don't want to give names as not all the help can be publicly acknowledged but Thanks to those who are helping (you know who you are) as well.

If anybody wants to design a new look/layout etc for it please do!

I am simply drawing all the elements one at a time in code rather than any visual editor so if somebody wants to take on the task of making the whole thing look nicer then pm me with details of what you can do (C++ visual studio express 2012).

I cannot give out the key. I will not give out the key. I also can't link to where you can find it.

I have given plenty of instructions in this thread about how to enter the key and it can be found in the existing download of the old editor (which included source code and was not written by me) or the documentation for that tool.

The other option is to ask people nicely that have already managed it to send you a copy of their key file. I cannot and will not send a keyfile however.

Please understand my position here, if I distribute the key or reveal it in any way I get in big trouble with Activision and the future of the app becomes a long court case smilie so sorry I can't be more help.

I really am sorry I can't just post a working app that includes the key or tell people in detail how to get it but legally that is a minefield. Please read through this thread and look at my replies to others on how to get it working. Also take note of the folder structure for the app for saving the backups (inside 'dumps') and the folders for saving images of your figures (150x150 24 bit bmp)

Not sure why you would want a backup of an item that doesn't change?

You can't change the item or figure type even if you have the backup as that data is write protected.
You can back it up to have it in your "collection" but there really is no point.

My understanding is that all items / characters use the same technology. They are all just an RFID chip inside the toy (or preorder card in case of the UFO hat). The data inside tells the game what it is.

I wanted to try to restore those backups over a spare magic item to see if I could get them to work in my game.

The header information for all figures (including items) is kept in a write protected memory location. The ONLY information on items is kept in this area. Simply not possible to copy it onto an existing figure/item. You can even try it yourself with two of your other items. It simply won't work.

So here is a recent build. It's probably got bugs fixed and should be better than most of the ones already downloaded.
I put it together in a neat zip so it has the folders etc in the right place and should just launch and run.
Get the key as previously mentioned or use your existing key file.

I do have images for most of my figures but due to obvious copyright issues I cannot share them.
Google Image search will find them without much trouble, it takes 30 seconds in MS Paint to resize and save them.

Please understand I would LOVE to share the key and images, but I can't and I wont. If I want to continue to develop this app it's important that it stays 100% legal so it's not just me being mean smilie

It's been a while and I am unsure what is bugged.

If people find bugs please detail them and report them here so I can fix them.

A bug is an implemented feature that doesn't work as intended, NOT something missing smilie
I haven't put all the quests in yet because there were problems with some of them but I can't remember which ones worked and which didn't.

Please report bugs here.

Yes, I intend to put in the full Trap Team roster (if possible, will need Trap Team before I can know).
It may be that I can show who is inside a trap too, that will be cool if I can.

Awesome smilie other than there only being the bad guy masher quest for swap force, the only other problem i've run into is with one of the elemental quests. I forget which, and will report back when I figure it out, but it doesn't record the full number when the quest is completed. (Shows something like 50/100 or something like that)

The problem with Quests is there are LOTS of them and each one has to be painfully manually coded into the app. It's a LOT of work per quest. It's also easy to make a tiny stupid mistake on them.

What about using a whole new RFID device (not a Skylanders toy)? For example- when playing with 125khz RFID credentials, there is a T55x7 series of cards which can emulate nearly all of them. Perhaps there is one for 13.56Mhz RFID devices as well? Or...

Has anyone here played with the ProxMark 3? It's a pretty versatile RFID development device that can read, write, copy, and spoof RFID devices (125Khz and 13.56Mhz). Even if the hardware version of this RFID module used in the Skylander toys doesn't support rewriting bits, the PM3 could replace that data with whatever you want...

Does anyone have a tutorial on how to change bytes in the figure arbitrarily (in other words, not by using Pyrofer's tool or the SkylanderEditor tool) and then fix the CRC bits correctly? I read the spec.txt that comes with SkylanderEditorV2, and the part about the CRCs is confusing.

Also - my son and I did a little experiment with hats in the game. The spec.txt says that 4 bytes in to the 0x09 (and again at 0x24?) block is where the Hat ID that the character is currently wearing is. Does that mean that changing that ID will enable hats that haven't been earned? Or does it just store the current hat, and you have to earn the hats or else changing the value does nothing?

We experimented with changing these values but it did not generate new hats (although the game did seem to take off the hat that the character was wearing...)

Also, did it matter that we didn't update the CRC after editing those areas? We tried running "CRC fix" in Pyrofer's tool but it always reported that everything was fine (???)

Also, after playing with the character a bit and buying some powerups, it seemed to us that the bytes in this area (which were supposed to be for the hat) were changed when we purchased items in the game...? In fact, using SkylanderEditorV2 changed these all to FF.

It feels like I have only half the story and I'm shooting in the dark...

On the plus side, it got my 8 year old interested in hex editors and understanding base 16, so that's a great thing!

Find the SkylanderEditor (either version 1 or V2) zip file. In the 'src' directory is a file called "crypt.cpp". The plaintext key (it looks like a copyright notice) is in there. Keep in mind it starts and ends with a space. (ASCII 0x20).

I'm using 2.1 so that could be the difference. The number of characters you can type is dependent on the characters you type. It is using a proportional font. I can type a lot more 'I's than I can type 'O's.


I had my fonts set to 125% for easier reading and after changing to 100% I can now enter all 53 bytes. I am getting 'Incorrect key data' though when I try to 'Make Key'. I have a 53 byte string starting with "Copyr" and ending with "rved. " that I got from the crypt.cpp file. I tried the 2.1 version of the program as well as the 2.0 and still no luck getting a valid key entered.



Thank you so much for posting this! I had this exact same problem and never would have thought of changing the font size to 100%. After rebooting, the tool now allows me to put the correct number of characters in and it accepted the key.

What I don't understand is why I had a text file called example.key with the correct key text saved in the same directory as the .exe and that didn't work either...

SomeonesDad, Please don't publicly discuss any further hacking the figures here.
1) It's against the forum rules and could get you in trouble
2) Activision DON'T like it and it could get you in trouble
3) Most people don't want or need the technical details and I would like to keep the thread clean for more user related info about the app.

This is not an admonishment or "nag" I just don't want you bringing furious wrath down upon yourself from somebody who takes offence to where your posts look like they may go.

In regards to hex editing, all I will say is that the original editor does some "nasty" things with bytes. A lot less was known then. No editing of ANY information will work without correct checksum byte values.
I think the original tool does some of them but not the giants ones.
There is also an issue with alternating blocks of data and editing the correct one (or both).

There is a lot to modifying the figure data but sadly, this forum is not the place to discuss it.

So i haven't downloaded it....because i have nothing to download it to... smilie ,but i can draw you a icon for it if you like....just let me know what you want it to look like and what size the icon needs to be 80x80 or 100x100 pixcels...or bigger...whatever. smilie

excellent work as always! i scanned in some trap team characters, cores and trap masters guys all scanned in fine. nitro krypt king showed up as dark variant. drobit shows up as 510 with no other info. eye small shows up with blank info too (red base ones). guessing the minis work differently than the other figures?

(edit just tried the trap team portal and got traps scanning, that is awesome! now if we could only have a virtual villain vault.. hint hint smilie

@Pheonix_Lord, it's not a smartphone app, it's for Windows PCs. Try it on your PC with any old wired portal for backing up your figure collection.

Basically it's a windows icon such as you would see on your desktop when you double click a program.

As for what it should look like? I don't know! Use your imagination on a Skylanders theme smilie

Maybe a Portal would be appropriate?

Traps should show up with their element and trapped villain. I don't have "special" flags for traps yet and have no details on the Kaos Trap either so if anybody has that, please send me a dump of it.

Due to popular request, now with figure reset option!!!

There is a reset button at the bottom right. There is NO "are you sure?", click it and it erases the LOADED FIGURE. It does NOT save or write to file or figure. It simply erased what is in memory.

So, either read the figure on the portal, hit RESET and then write back to the figure or simply re load/read to undo hitting reset.

I AM NOT responsible for anybody resetting anything they didn't mean to!!!

IT WIPES THE FIGURE back to "factory" blank status with NO data of any kind. It does not understand special figures that were provided with level 5 and money etc, it will blank them back to normal factory standard empty figures.

Use at your own risk.

Hi, sorry, I wasn't clear. It has to be original artwork. A photo of a figure/portal is no good. I could do that myself.
However, it will cause Activision to send me nasty letters.

The icon has to be original drawing by somebody willing to give me the rights to use it. An original Drawing of a portal is fine, but this photo sadly would not be.

Thanks for trying though.

Also, I was thinking a top down birds eye view of an old original SSA portal would be more appropriate maybe.

Are you sure it's not working?

Remember it resets the current loaded Skylander in the buffer ONLY. You need to re-write that back to the figure from the portal menu to do anything.

You put the figure on the portal, read it in.

Hit RESET. Nothing will appear to have changed.
Hit WRITE FIGURE in the menu to write the buffer back to the figure. nothing will appear to have changed.
either hit READ FIGURE in the menu or remove and replace it.

A blank "unused figure" will be read in.
