Practice makes perfect! Little by little and study by study improvement just gets crazy. I wouldn't expect to be finishing pictures so quickly as I am this year(though I need to stop playing skylanders and actually finish them) years ago but I got to this point by fixing bad habit after bad habit.

This time, I wanted to dark different shades of the base colours, not just black and white and then change the opacity, which can be could be done well but can't be depended on all the time. --- Needz more eh-mo-shuns.

Black and white shading just looks glossy, indeed. A good trick for digital shading is to use a color opposite to the light source (warm/cold), set that layer to Multiply, then remove the opacity by a bunch so the color changes depending on what's under it.

Of course, it doesn't replace good ol' color theory for shading, but it's faster if you already know what you want the shadow to look like.
