So yeah the American government kinda sucks rn. Very little prep for the virus, telling people to go to work, very little testing making an artificial count of both dead and alive, and the fact that people are encouraging travel because of cheap plane prices

I’m just wondering if things will get to the point that the whole country shuts down, like Italy.

I understand the hand sanitizer shortage but not having any toilet paper is ridiculous.

This toilet paper situation means it's the perfect time for America to switch over to bidets.

Very few understand just how unprepared the world was for something like this.

In terms of the effect on daily life, this is hands down the most significant event since 9/11. When this is over, everything will change.

I guess we should just be grateful the universe decided to give us a gentle love tap this time. Imagine if this thing had a much higher death rate, we still wouldn't be able to do jack **** about it. All it takes is for a virus to be contagious before symptoms appear and suddenly we're completely helpless.

Well at roughly just a 6% death rate, it could be much worse. I'm not saying we should be lax about it, but I reckon we could at least manage to do a lot better than just high alert panic mode and treating it like the end of the world, even though that might be giving our species a good degree more credit than it's due.

The actual mortality rate is 1-1.5% - which is still pretty damn high and a damn good reason for us to be concerned.

The reason why it's such a big deal is because it's new, which means no one has any immunity and no real treatments are available. The more people it infects, the more likely it transmits to someone who falls into the 1-1.5% - aka the elderly, immunocompromised, people with preexisting conditions, etc.

Erring on the side of caution is forgivable IMO.

^Yes, if you've had MSM sex (which is the most common vector of HIV and other infectious STIs) within the past 12 months, you can't donate blood. The risk of an infection testing negative in the patient but testing positive later in the blood taken isn't worth chancing.

I had a guest lecturer who worked for Public Health in various councils come in and he said he thinks it's been about before December. LOTS of people had a nasty virus around that time but it would just have been diagnosed as flu with no tests.

If this is the case I think I've already had it back in December. My regular lecturer went to Beijing and got a nasty virus. Several people on my course were ill at the same time. I caught it off someone in my presentation group. She said she had been really sick and still was but came in just to do this presentation and sat next to me. She said she almost didn't come in and I wish she hadn't to be honest. I was then really ill the following week (after the incubation period). I had a dry cough, aches/chills in my lower back, temperature and bad headaches. Can't remember if my throat was a bit sore or not.
I did not have a runny nose at all. No blocked nose or stuffiness during the main part which I thought was odd at the time.
These symptoms lasted 4/5 days. I just sat on the sofa and couldn't go out because the stabbing pain in my head made me literally yell every time it happened (icepick headache) and was too tired.

One this had finished I was blowing mucus out my nose and mouth for weeks.

I'd say it's bad but you feel worse with 24 hour flu as that's more intense.

Just because it's a virus from China doesn't automatically make it COVID-19.

Your symptoms were common to all viral infections, so it's impossible to determine which virus you had based on symptoms alone.

Yes. Which is why "I think" was included in my sentence.
Only thing I can say for certain was that it was not a common cold.

The effect this has had on society is much more extreme than I think anyone thought it would be. Seems like everyone thought this would be another Ebola or Swine flu, but nope, this is huge. The closures, movie delays and how it effects everyone shows that no one, absolutely no one was prepared for this. Many people probably thought this couldn't happen, but to quote Ken Watanabe in Godzilla 2014.

'The arrogance of man is thinking nature is in our control, and not the other way around".

Hopefully, once things get better, we'll be much, much more prepared for the next virus.

Stay safe and clean everybody!
