1. I read that some of the elemental gates can be glitched. Can all of them be glitched as to avoid purchasing all the Trap Masters?
2. Do you actually need Villains for anything?
3. Are there quests in this game?
4. The Adventure Packs - are they at all referenced if you don't buy any of them?

1. Most of them can only be opened with teleporting characters and Knight Mare,and only a select few have the level transition glitch. They also don't count towards the 'Gates Opened' checkmark. The Light gate in Soda Springs can be entered by having co-op on and by a player falling from the top of the hill to the rock beside the gate, eventually causing the second player to glitch inside the hill and able to walk through the gate.
2. Villains give their quest checkmarks,and some give hats.
3.Villain Quests only.
4.Unless you count Unknown Gates referencing the Light and Dark ones, no, I don't think so.

I do have some follow up questions then though

1. So, with Loop, I could get inside the gates?
2. Are the hats shown in the hat select screen if you don't catch the villain?

1. Loop or Shift,or Hood Sickle if you have an undead trap.
2.All hats are in the same select screen(avaliable or not), but you'll need them to complete the level stars no matter what.

2. So like the past then. I wish they would make it so just the available ones were there.
Which villains have hats to unlock? Just one per element or what?

It varies,really. You're better off checking the walkthrough page on the site(not specific levels, the walkthrough page) for a quick look at which villains give what hats.

It looks like I need for hat purposes at least one per element. If it were just a few I would get it.
Now to decide for myself if I'm ok with not quite 100% via hats and checkmark for element gates.

what is effected by not collecting all the traps?
i have 1 of each element (so 11 total), but thats it.
will rank be effected?
anything else? there is no acolytes/achievements right?

The only thing affected by number of traps is the number of villains accessible at any given time.

Personally, I planned to get a 1:2 ratio of traps/villains where applicable (with one of each design, apart from my least favorite - the "handstand"). Out of all the traps I want, I'm only missing Shrub Shrieker, which isn't available here yet. Of course, Magic and Kaos have an uneven number of villains, so 2:3 in Magic and 1:1 of Kaos.

You guys are sure Loop can open elemental gates? I can't find anything on it elsewhere.
I can find Shift and Hood Sickle for a few of them though.

Also is there a way to quickly earn money in this one?
Like Hidden Treasure Chest in SSA, the one deck in SG, or Sky Diamond in SSF?

Trap chomp chest, and then use his secondary attack in level one. You should find 3 spots that you can dig into, and each should contain 1000 gold.

With that Earth Trap you're better off with Golden Queen. Do a hard arena challenge or go to Mystic Mill and just turn the Shield Shredders into gold, break them out with the skylander,rinse and repeat. Easy 3000 gold even if you're not paying too much attention to their health.
