EDIT: UPDATE FROM E3

Looks like Nintendo took some good lessons from Skylanders, huh?

This raises some questions at least on the Nintendo side of the franchise; Nintendo and Skylanders has always been buddy-buddy since the first game and has had an exclusive figure in a bundle with the 3DS for all 3 games and presumably Swap Force as well.

According to a journalist in attendance to the Nintendo Fiscal Meeting (where this was just announced):
"NFP in development since last year, rather make not just a figurine but does more, hope to show related games in development at E3"

"Will launch figurine business called NFP- nfc featured platform, showed Mario figure across many games being used including saves"

"NFP game and figures shown at E3, 3DS will also get IR NFP reader so figures can be used across WiiU and 3DS"

Well, honestly, I'd say it's Nintendo finally releasing something prophesied in Super Smash bros series.

Though it's definitely thanks to the success of Skylanders though.

To all the parents that buy their kids this, they will be upset about this. "Not another toy thing that i have to buy in order for my kid to play!"

IMHO, Theres not enough information to either feel like this is going to be a flop, or a success. I think it depends on the fans though, i guess if Mario fans are more likely to buy it.... im sure theres lots of Mario fans. Who knows.

Please, oh please make a Little Mac figure.

I have a feeling that this won't affect Skylanders that much. To this day, there's tons of Mario merchandise on the shelves, they don't seem to sell at all.

Thats what i kinda was thinking, that there is already a lot of mario merchandise. People are going to feel, " whats so different about this? i already have like (insert number here) of this kind of stuff!"

Mario merchandise is incredibly popular over here, so I'll be surprised if it doesn't make a hit in Europe.

For me, I'd be much more interested in the villains from Mario (Dry Bones, Dimentio, etc.) so unless Mario Party is getting an upgrade, I'm guessing the only characters I'd purchase would be Luigi and Yoshi. Maybe Daisy and Rosalina too.

To me, the ideas of toys coming to life thing is dying down. I dont see the major "special thing"
Also, skylanders can basickly go from game A (for instance, battlegrounds) to game B (skylanders swap force) etc. Realy...
The only figure I'd buy would beBowser JR. I have good memories about him.

If they do this right, it could go over very well. Use them as a way to store a profile and customization for that character to import into several games. Take it to your friend's house to load in your profile for play over there.

From what I've seen it is less of a way to import a character into a game and more of a way to share data between multiple games on the 3ds and the WiiU.

I could see these figures working across various games--from Smash Brothers and standard Super Mario World games, to games such as Mario Party or any of the sporting (eg., golf or baseball) games. In many of these games, you unlock characters as you go. So perhaps the figures will unlock their playable characters within the game. On one hand this would be cool, because there are so many (future title) games the figures could potentially work in. On the other hand, given the costliness of collecting both future Skylanders and Mario, we may all end up bankrupt and living in a cardboard box down by the river, surrounded by the hard plastic stares of our little skylandy and mario friends lol!!

The good news is that the cream will rise to the top. Toys to life is too costly for the consumer to allow too many entrants, so this category will need to have stellar games. The bad thing is its going to cost a few of us early adopters a few extra bucks before we weed out the chaff as new entrants to the sector continue to arise. It would make me super sad if Skylanders ended up being the weakest link because of the time and money I've already invested in the franchise. Hopefully Activision continues to stay a step ahead. (Yes, it is my opinion that Activision is a step ahead of Disney right now)

Licensing can still make it possible, and frankly I'd like to see companies like Capcom get in on this. It's definitely wait and see, but could easily be done right OR horribly wrong...

Right now, Sonic is only appearing in Nintendo things due to a small partnership (I believe Nintendo is getting 3 exclusive games for their systems?). Technically speaking, if Sega wanted to enter into some partnership with Nintendo to make a Sonic figure, it'd be possible but I feel the whole thing with that would get extremely convoluted (would Sega get money from just Sonic figures sold? From all figures sold? etc)

Personally, I think this is a really great opportunity for Nintendo. I expressed on NeoGAF that if Nintendo can make some of the Skylanders/Infinity money, then that's great and if they can somehow innovate/encourage Skylanders and Infinity to make BETTER figures...that's even better.

I think likely we'll see Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, Bowser and Donkey Kong first. I figured that for all intents and purposes, Nintendo can sell the Mario/Zelda figures to kids who are more familiar with them then they are say, Samus or Captain Falcon. In that case, they can try to market those figures to the "older" crowd. Not to say that people from either grouping couldn't buy the other figures, but it'd be interesting to see what they do with the market.

I dunno, guess it could be. No one moved it yet though.

Figured it'd be interesting to see the Skylanders community's take on other NFC figures.

Pikachu is in the lineup also:
http://entertainment.verizon.c...y_line_at_e3-ap

The "amiibo" figures, the first of which are due out later this year, will include characters from well-known Nintendo franchises, such as the Villager from "Animal Crossing"; the "Wii Fit" trainer; sword-wielding Link from "The Legend of Zelda"; intergalactic solider Samus Aran from "Metroid"; Pikachu from "Pokemon"; iconic gorilla Donkey Kong; pink shape-shifter Kirby; and Mario, Princess Peach and Yoshi from "Super Mario Bros."

To better answer your question min8or, it's based on Smash Bros. Mario it seems, thus the lack of the white and red attire fire flower Mario normally should wear.

They are actually not needed to play. You can play Smashbros4 on the Wii U without these extras

They look high-quality, and less toy-like than Skylanders (meaning more fragile). Higher price point maybe?

Assuming they'll make the full SSB roster, I'd totally buy a Lucas. Even though there hasn't been any news on him returning yet.

These are completely different from Skylanders. People really need to stop assuming it's copying when someone makes a figure that you use in a video game. Why can there not be competition? Skylanders wasn't the first to use this concept either but everyone forgets about that.
