So like how many people actually pay gems for stuff? The only time I've ever paid gems was to get Trigger Happy when he was on sale, thanks to doubling the players in May.

I've bought quite a few things with gems. Three #1 fans (and a few other companions), two Giant houses, and two adventure airships (with the May 200 gems--the airships were marked down to 100 the following weekend). But I got Surfer Slam Bam and Buddy Wrecking Ball the same way you did.

I've never bought wish stones with gems and have only bought gems with actual money once, but I've bought a lot of other things with gems. You only have 8 Skyanders; the more Skylanders the more gems to buy things with.
