I'm of the opinion that ramming another vessel (the larger the better), is the best way to enter a naval battle. Some prefer mortar fire or raising the black, but I personally think if someone can't guess your intentions before you tear them in two with the bowsprit they deserve what's coming to them.

Now if this is aerial piracy, I do believe one needs all the advantages one can get before charging headfirst into battle. In such case I would recommend mortar fire and broadsides, before moving into a position that is much more tactically advantageous. By disabling the guns, or at the very least requiring them to re-calibrate, you get enough time to attack and - once more, split the ship in two. If you can't split the ship in two, board immediately and find something to hold on to. God didn't intend us to fly, and it is through our air machines that we are punished for our folly.
