Before Mario had these issues let's look at a lesser known series: Yoshi's Island!
In this game we see BABY MARIO and BABY LUIGI are carried by a stork but MARIO falls onto the back of the Yoshi, the dedicated Yoshi brings MARIO through an island, and in Yoshi's New Island we see that MARIO HAS PARENTS!
Now then, how exactly did Mario lose his own identity, well, right after the events of Yoshi's New Island, the babies travel TO THE FUTURE in Mario and Luigi Partners In Time!
This is an alternate universe with Mario and Luigi Mario and BABY MARIO in that game is the REAL MARIO WE KNOW NOW!!
Baby Mario soon learns how to do all the things that big Mario from the Mario and Luigi universe could do, puts on a mustache and goes out to save Princess Peach!

But... He gets the wrong princess and goes after the wrong big guy in the 1981 arcade classic: Donkey Kong.
After defeating the ape multiple times, Mario gets a reputation and everyone knows him as the hero of the mushroom kingdom.
Mario accidentally eats a MUSHROOM which is a drug that causes Mario to lose himself entirely and now all he knows is to jump and murder turtles!
Years go by as Mario jumps and stomps through wacky worlds, paintings, resort islands and even OUTER SPACE, saving the princess from Bowser constantly.

But how do we know Mario isn't just a short man? We can't compare sizes...
UNTIL THE HIT GAME SUPER MARIO ODYSSEY CAME OUT IN 2017!!
There are REAL people in New Donk City and Mario isn't even half the size of any of the New Donkers, but they don't know that Mario is just a kid with a surprising athletic ability, Mario can't even speak full sentences!
Everyone thinks Mario's older so they don't think to TEACH HIM HOW TO SPEAK!
