Gonna be teaching the King's English to a bunch of wide-eyed whippersnappers. Assuming I can survive the 14+ hour flight without crashing into the ocean.

Anyone else here ever do the whole teaching abroad thing?

are you going there alone? where are you going to live while you're there?

The school is paying for my apartment. And yeah, I'll be living there alone, which is fine by me. Although I do plan to immerse myself in the culture and meet lots of people and hopefully learn the language to some degree, and maybe date some local Korean girls if I can either learn enough Korean to talk to them or if any of them know enough English to talk to me.

The idea is mainly to immerse them in conversational English. It's actually a secondary class that they take alongside a class with a Korean-speaking teacher, who focuses more on the dry, structural part of the English language (and that itself is on top of the more basic English class they have in the regular public school program, since my class is a supplementary private school class...Korean kids spend a **** ton of time in school). My job is to make English fun for them with English-oriented games and other activities so their brains absorb the language instinctively.

Ouch.
I've been on a nine hour flight.
14 hours sounds like a nightmare. Good luck!

That's pretty fun. I'm not too much into Korean stuff but it's always nice to meet a new country. Bring up stuff you can use offline to the flight, like music and games. That helped me. How much will you stay, anyway?

Hopefully you have something to do on that flight. That sounds exciting though, how long are you going to be living there?

I'll probably be living there for about four or five years. Then I'll start teaching in another country, like Japan or somewhere in Europe. I don't plan on moving back to the States any time soon.
