If it's not cracked/dead, I'd put it back. Could be another bird trying to steal the nest or fool the robin.

But I can't touch it, or the momma bird won't accept it.

And I don't Know where the nest is

The only species of birds that is able to smell scent is Vultures, Parrots, Sea Birds, and Kiwis. So putting the egg back yourself is possible and the mother would not notice any human smell and reject the egg (Since she's a robin).

Yeah, the whole scent thing is kind of bull for most species. Their issue is having humans near their egg/baby bird, but if you just put it and leave it, get some good distance, she'll probably come back if she hasn't given up looking.

Okay, but I still don't know where the freaking nest is

It fell under a tree, but I don't see a nest in the tree

See if you can find a spy glass or binoculars and see if you can spot the nest. If not then I say wrap the egg up so it stays warm and see about leaving it outside near the tree. Like build a mini-nest outside so the mom can find her small egg child.

I clicked this topic expecting this 100%

that's a myth, it's false, birds olfactory senses aren't strong enough to detect that

If anything, try to keep the egg warm while you look for the nest.

Where and why the hell did this false myth originate? Why is it such a commonly thought notion?

From what I've heard, there was this bird flu going on and parents were scared of their kids touching birds and contracting it. So someone took off with the idea of mammals abandoning young because of human scent and applied it to birds. I'm guessing.

From what I read on reddit recently, it's because little kids don't get that the birds won't come back if you keep hovering around the baby one, so they made up the scent thing. I know I did that when I was younger, but thankfully low attention span meant the bird eventually got rescued.
