This does come off as pretentious and very "We...are Millennials....and we're gonna change the world."

no, the problem is that kylie jenner gives the cop a pepsi, it's saying that cops are terrible people, but you can still make peace with them. if millennials want to make "peace" so badly, then they should take their politics where it's actually needed, like it third world countries. for example, help actually oppressed women get into schools and learn to become doctors or scientist. The US, while not perfect, is a lot better than say...the 1960's, where blacks couldn't go into the same buildings as whites. We've reached a point where gays have equal rights. Perhaps its time for social change in places where it isn't as accepted? hmm? sorry about ranting, it's just how i feel.

I'm genuinely confused as to why people are pissed off at this. It's relatively harmless. Or am I just going crazy?

I think people are seeing it as making a mockery of the issues currently going on. There are people protesting a number of things lately (not to say they don't have a good reason). Then Pepsi comes along using these serious issues affecting people right now and uses them in an ad where a cop is given a Pepsi which seems to magically make everything better, which overly simplifies the issues and the solutions that people are trying to fight for. It is probably making people feel like Pepsi is trying to make a joke of their suffering while also trying to profit off of it. Though what do I know, I just read the article. I didn't watch the thing.

I guess it's not really about the marketing person being out of touch of reality, but companies trying to profit off of social issues always rubs people the wrong way. For the former there are MANY examples out there of trying to get on with the times and failing, but this one takes a step ahead and tries to make it a cool thing that everyone can totally socialize over.

The best definition of privilege is when you don't think something's a problem because it's not a problem to you.
If you diss BLM, other movements, and the general populace for being "offended" by this "harmless" ad, then congratulations. You just proved their point. |

Finally saw the ad and yeah I absolutely get why people would be bothered by it.
It's kinda making light and a mockery of actual social issues in the name of advertising a product that does more harm than good on the whole. It doesn't have the world's worst intentions (just off the top of my head, the Super Bowl commercial for the petroleum industry is pretty malicious) but it wasn't a smart move at all. |
