During the 60s and 70s Godzilla was transformed to a sort of children's superhero who beat up other monsters and saved the day. He appealed to kids and Toho leaned all the way into that. It's from this era that Godzilla gets his reputation for being corny.

It's law. After a while in a given timeline, Godzilla will become a de facto hero as the series includes other monsters for him to fight. It can get a little tedious if every film was just about him stomping on the cities while the humans try and fail to kill him.
They've rebooted three times now (this doesn't include American standalone films) and while I want to think it'll be different this time given the ending to Shin Gojira, it'll probably be no different here.

If you have any interest in Godzilla at all, you need to see Shin Gojira.

Strangely enough, the American "Godzilla" cartoon was a lot better than this one.

And Godzilla's been a "good guy" (More often he's been the lesser of two evils, or in this case, monsters) in quite a few films, especially during the 60s and 70s.

This. The whole hero thing was kind of cheesy (then again, so was all Showa entertainment), but I like best his portrayal as somewhat of an antihero in the Heisei and Millennium eras. I like the idea that as much as humanity hates Godzilla, they'd be ****ed without him.

I saw this when I was a little kid. I actually saw this a lot. It wasn't great... but yeah. Also in case you didn't know, Godzilla fought the Avengers in New York once.

Yeah, I liked how he was portrayed in the Heisei era best. With 2014, they kind of revisited it. With Shin Godzilla, also known as Godzilla: Resurgence,
he's once again portrayed as an unstoppable, evil beast.

He's so evil in it though. I mean, I think this is the most evil Godzilla ever, maybe not counting GMK Godzilla? Since in GMK it was literally trying actively to destroy everything it could. It seemed like Shin Godzilla was a little more animalistic overall. I feel like... with the way Godzilla is the way he is in Shin, that I'm not so sure if other monsters would really work. By the end of the movie it wouldn't even be Godzilla anymore with how Shin works. Probably confusing to people who haven't seen it yet...
