I don't think anyone knows the true reason. I don't know anyone that old.

There were multiple.

There is a crater in mexico showing that a meteor hit, so we can confirm a meteor did hit at some point, sometime during the Cretaceous Period. But even with the size of the crater the meteor created, it wouldn't be enough to instantly kill all the dinosaurs. It killed a good amount, but not all. However it was the events caused by the impact that killed them. The main one was lack of sunlight, caused by the dust and debris that covered the earth from the impact. It blocked the sunlight from the plants, causing the plants to die. Causing the herbivores to die due to lack of food, which, in turn, caused the carnivores to die for the same reason. Also, the dust in the air caused sickness to many species. This pretty much wiped out the dinosaurs, except for a few that survived, such as the Archaeopteryx, which has been one of the big factors in mutating to today's birds. Without sunlight, the world became cold and desolate- the ice age. However their reign was ended due to early humans poaching for food and global warming. The few species that have stood the test of time have mutated over millions of years into some of today's species.
