Just a reminder to keep things civil. Debate is fine but don't resort to flaming.

So if 50 people apply for a job opening at a newly built Burger King, should the Burger King be forced to hire all 50 of them?

Of course not. Many people are under qualified or over qualified and so on.

But at the same time you legally cannot fire or not hire someone based entirely on their race, or gender, or religious views. That is considered discrimination. Shouldn't the same apply to your sexual orientation?

The amendments were mainly to cover new concepts and oversights. The abolition of slavery and other such concepts were just things they didn't have time to implement at first. Plus the founding fathers were against homosexuality. When they put them in the military they made them stop codoing homosexual acts, and they complied.

Considering a chunk of the Founding Fathers were slave owners and so was a large portion of the United States, I doubt they simply "forgot to abolish it".

I was saying that an amendment like that would make no sense. Our founding fathers were perfectly aware of marriage and homosexuality. If the Constitution should've had anything about that, it would. And yes, I did take American history, with all As, and was the teacher's favorite student.

It would make perfect sense in this day and age. And if you did take American History with all As (which was completely irrelevant btw), you'd know the founding fathers didn't make all the Amendments. That came after.

The amendments were mainly to cover new concepts and oversights. The abolition of slavery and other such concepts were just things they didn't have time to implement at first. Plus the founding fathers were against homosexuality. When they put them in the military they made them stop codoing homosexual acts, and they complied.

Yeah but to deny you employment based only on the fact that you're black, or a woman, or Muslim, would be discrimination and against the law, since these things don't determine your skill with the job in question (especially Burger King).

How does being bi or gay make you any better or worse at your job?

If you submit an application for a job, and you aren't hired, and through magical mind-reading you figure out it's because you're a homosexual, should you be able to sue and get a fat stack? Because they can also not hire you for having brown eyes, and that's legal.

If the employer isn't asking you about your sexuality it shouldn't matter.

If the employer is asking about your sexuality, that should be a red flag in on itself.

Ryan I think one of the biggest things you need to keep in mind right now is that we're not talking about religious institutions. If your example/issue was with a church being forced to accept gay people or do gay weddings, then I would understand your point. It goes against the religious beliefs and it shouldn't be forced upon them to do something against those beliefs (regardless if I or others disagree with it).

But your example wasn't a church. Your example was Burger King, a public company that by law is an equal opportunity employer. Burger King cannot and does not discriminate by race, gender, religious beliefs, or ethnicity, because such would be against the law. The same should (and in some places already does) apply to sexual orientation.

Nobody here is saying that you have to love gay people and kiss every single one Ryan. I understand your religious beliefs and while I strongly disagree with them, I'm not about to try and force it. But you also need to understand that public employers, companies, and government institutions should not discriminate and not hire someone based on their sexual orientation.

What? Discrimination when hiring?

You're right in that it doesn't happen all that often. Because it's illegal. Some CVS stores got caught discriminating against blacks when hiring recently and they got slammed for it.

So why shouldn't sexual orientation be protected under that? Hey if they don't know your orientation it shouldn't matter right (since realistically an employer shouldn't be asking straight out if you're gay)?

In all fairness, by legalizing same sex marriage nationwide, it's only a matter of time before they get civil protection and protection under equal opportunity employment.

It's not a matter of "if" or "why not". It's "when".

Love wins because the LGBT community, who has been fighting for years to get rights, has now gotten gay marriage legal. It's the sign of progression.
