I never meant for this to be anything more than a one-off chart with some percentages but things happened and I got a lot more into it so there's a lot going on in here.

Statistics for the Week of May 11th

~62.359% of users are Red Sparx
~24.633% of users are Green Sparx
~6.494% of users are Blue Sparx
~4.843% of users are Yellow Sparx
~1.192% of users are Gold Sparx
~0.669% of users are Emerald Sparx
~0.087% of users are Platinum Sparx

The missing 0.392% are due to rounding to 3 decimal places.
Hunters are included where they would be by gem count.
Obviously, users in who are in the Ripto, Gnorc, Rhynoc, and Crystallized categories were not included.

All users combined have a total of 3,344,139 gems. The mean amount of gems is 243.

Change caused by gem day

As expected, the amount of Red Sparxes decreased but not by too much. Every other rank except Platinum increased their numbers.

The more crazy stuff with the bell curve and such I'll add in later once I get it a bit more well written and organized.

3,344,139 gems for the 13751 users that I used for the above percentages. That comes out to a mean of 243 gems. Thank you, Excel, for your ability to add that many numbers quickly.

I only exclude the Ripto'd/Gnorc'd/Rhynoc'd/Crystallized accounts because you can't access those from the users list and going to all ~12900 of their profiles 1 by 1 would be a nightmare.

All users combined have a total of 3,352,806 gems. This means that over the weekend 8667 gems were distributed. Once the 100 gem bonus comes to pass this increase should be 10x greater at least. I'm rather interested how that many gems will affect the rank distributions.

From the 8667 gem increase it can be inferred that there were approximately 542-868 active(logged in and posted) users last week. There may be users who didn't post and only got 7-9 gems last week but that's impossible to account for at this point.

If any mistakes were made, let me know.

Time for something a bit more advanced.

The mean gem count(μ) is 244.
The standard deviation(σ) is 536. Calculate the distance each point is from the mean, average those distances and that's your standard deviation. Distance implies positive values.

From this we can obtain the probability density function, assuming normality. This function is:
[User Posted Image]

When graphed it look like this: [User Posted Image]
The green line is the mean.

From this each user can calculate their z-score or standard score. This is a measure of how many standard deviations you are from the mean. You can do this by using the simple formula [User Posted Image] where x is your gem count, μ is 244, and σ is 536. A positive z-score means you are above the mean, a negative z-score means you are below the mean.
For example my z-score is [User Posted Image] which evaluates to 3.291.
Due to the extreme skewness of the data it is impossible to have a z-score of less than -0.455
dark52's z-score is the highest of everyone here at 14.060

The z-score any given point isn't really significant to the data as a whole but it's fun to calculate.

Now, as for calculating the percentage of users that have more or less gems than you. I'm pretty sure it involves taking the integral of the PDF but that ain't nice. I'll check to be sure on this one and edit this later.

#25 Posted: 17:42:55 20/05/2015
It's worth keeping in mind that while many red sparxes will upgrade to green today if 100 gems are handed out, it probably won't put that significant of a dent into the percentage of red sparxes on the site. The reason so many accounts are red is because people make them, use them for a week or two, and then abandon them (or in many cases, never even log back in after the account is activated).

I can see a 3%-5% decrease in red sparxes, and that's still being very generous.

EDIT: Also so much effort has been put into such an interesting thread that I almost feel tempted to sticky it for a day or two.

EDIT 2: 100 gems have been added.

Yeah, 2-4ish new users join every day. So anyone who joined in the past 4 weeks(that seems to be how dark52 determines a month, rather than the actual calender month) will get pushed to green. That's approximately 100 or so at most, which is hardly a scratch in the 8200 or so red sparxes.

- - -

Once I figure out how many gems were given out today I'll know exactly how many users were active in the past month. If it's anything like what I figured for the weekly gems yesterday it's a really small portion of all users.

I use a program called Gyazo. The .gif version lets you record a part of the screen that you choose for a few seconds and automatically turns it into a .gif.

You could also use any number of screen recording software to take a video of your screen but that's too much hassle for a few seconds.

So a little over 1% of all red sparxes upgraded to green? Interesting. Also eye opening to just how many throwaway and abandoned accounts are on here.

Also interesting that there are only 12 Platinum sparxes/mods that would fit that. You'd think there'd be a few more.

Speaking from my own experience, banned users don't show up in the user listing for me, and finding them requires looking up the individual user ID (or finding posts from them on the forum, which on S&N is incredibly difficult for anyone banned before 2013).

Basically I can't do anything you already can to find banned users.

You know, if you *really* wanted to get *everyone*...

You could come up with a method to make Excel kick out all of the user ID numbers that are missing from your list and turn those missing IDs into clickable URL links that go direct to that user's profile. It'd still take all the work of having to go into each profile and copy the information over, but it'd be a bit easier to actually determine which profiles you need to go into.

And while you're at it, you could copy over their status (Ripto, etc.) and compile a list of how many accounts are in each type of status.
