I only really play the "big" Mario games. And even then, not all of them.

The only 2D games I really care for are the original SMB, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U. I also really liked Super Mario Land as a kid. Also, Super Mario Maker if it counts, but that's just because I'm an aspiring game designer and designing levels in Mario Maker is a good way to exercise in that department.

And then with the 3D games I only really care about Super Mario 64 DS, the Galaxy games, and 3D World.

I dabble into spin offs sometimes but I'm not someone who buys every Mario Tennis or anything like that.

And the only character that is a consistent favourite for me is Rosalina. Otherwise, I like Luigi, Bowser, Yoshi, Toad (mainly Captain Toad), and Wario, but it varies from game to game. Like I love Bowser in Super Paper Mario but I don't care for him in any of the 2D games or in 64 and Galaxy.

Same here.

Unless you count Smash Bros. or Mario Kart as traditional "Mario" games, then I haven't played one in years, save for Mario Maker. The last one I played was Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on the GameBoy Color. >.>;

I also don't really care much for the Sonic series as a whole.

Unlike Mario, it was never really important to me as a kid, so I never really invested myself into any of the games.

Agreed. The only Sonic games I've ever played were Adventure 1, Adventure 2, the GBA games, and Unleashed, all for fun in the Skype group, and tbh I really disliked them.

I liked how the Sonic comics were when Penders was still around
Flynn is pretty good too, it might be because of nostalgia but I just like Penders' stories a little more.
I REALLY hate what he did to the comic after he left though (the genesis wave)

I don't care for Mario games and the ones in the past I've played are a few of the Mario Party games and Mario Kart. I've never played the Galaxy games. I've also played a few games from the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games series and Yoshi Story on the N64 (don't even know if this counts as a Mario side game. Probably not). None of the games I've played involving Mario are even proper Mario games.

Team Chaotix is my favourite Sonic team. I wish the team was in the games more, and I'd much rather have them over newer characters like Silver and Blaze.

I partially agree with this.

I mean, I haven't collected the comics in years(and that's honestly because I just can't invest the time or money into ANY comics anymore like I can with movies or games), but from a story standpoint, I always thought the comics were overall better despite the games having some pretty great stories every now and then(i.e. Colors).

Also Scourge the Hedgehog is one of my favorite Sonic characters.

It's actually unpopular to believe that stories in the Sonic games are better than the comics, not the other way around. I always see people saying "JUST GO TO THE COMICS IF YOU WANT GOOD SONIC STORIES".

That being said, it's an opinion I hold.

(SLIGHTLY SATIRICAL BUT MOSTLY GENUINE RANT COMING)

The Archie Sonic comics completely flanderise and bastardise a lot of the game characters into completely unlikable and hollow shells of what they're supposed to be, and do a lot of big fat no-nos in terms of characterisation of these characters, most notably Sonic himself.

And a lot of the original characters are either OC donut steels, or they are just bland additions to the cast. I like a few of them though.

Overall though, I just think a lot of what they do with the game characters is stupid and bad fanfic levels of quality. Also while Sally is fine as a character, Ian Flynn's own over-glorification of her spoils an otherwise great character.

The art is great though in the more recent entries and it has it's moments, and in terms of humour it's generally fine. But in everything else it's just bad and is an adaptation in name only.

Now for some highlights that grind my gears the most:

Special Snowflake Archie Sonic is inarguably the most important Sonic of all the Sonics, even more than SEGA Sonic apparently
[User Posted Image]

Ken Penders decides to try and explain Charmy's size inconsistency in a way that literally makes no sense and nobody even asked for an explanation anyway
[User Posted Image]

I'm supposed to take this scene seriously?.....
[User Posted Image]
[User Posted Image]

Someone at Archie probably gets off to Blaze bondage porn all day
[User Posted Image]

OK, Sally's being cool and collected, assessing the situation, not gonna fall for any dumb traps...
[User Posted Image]

*one issue later*
[User Posted Image]
....Fffffflyyyyynnnn! We get it, Sally's your pet character and you'll poorly write an otherwise great character just to put all of the attention on her but COME. ON.

They even have "blatant" bolded and italicised in that panel from the latter issue.

Double standards at their finest (also terrible art from some of the older ones. Is Tail's supposed to be Mangle from FNAF here?)
[User Posted Image]

But yeah, it's not all bad and it's definitely improved lately but I overall just can't see why anyone would like the comics over the games, at least if they like the characters in the games, when the comic is plagued with moments like these and then some.

^ I agree with that. TLOS Spyro has the worse design.

Although one thing that's always bothered me with Skyro and TLOS Spyro's design is that their horns are impractical. Classic Spyro's horns went up so that when he charged he could actually use them for that purpose; the the sharp ends of his horns would pierce the enemy. Whenever Skyro or TLOS Spyro charge, they would just be hitting the enemy with the scales on their head rather than their horns, since their horns are bent too back. Classic Spyro's charge would deal more damage.

Nintendo Fanboys: Can't accept the fact that since the N64 generation, Nintendo's lost in 3/4 of them.

XBOX Fanboys: Defended the XBOX One's bad policies, expressed snobbery over the PS3 with the X360 until it's sales were surpassed by the PS3.

PlayStation Fanboys: Overinflate the fact that since the PS1 generation, Sony's won in 3/4 of them.

Unpopular opinions, huh? Considering I have so many, I'll start with just a few. xD

I despise Nintendo, and I have little respect for huge Nintendo fans. Nintendo are the least inspired, most back stabbing leading game company today, and yet nobody says crap about it. A lot of their games offensively treat their audience like idiots, but nobody calls them out. They're trying to raise the handheld game price from $40 to $50... again, nobody calls them out. Most of their games are the same game as last year with a new number on it, people still buy it. The Nintendo NX is doing some of the bad things the Xbox One originally would... everyone flipped out on Microsoft and made them fix the Xbox One, but nobody wants to tell Nintendo they're doing wrong. Even their Youtube policies are disgusting. I used to have respect for them, but they've become things that if I said, I'd get banned. lol

I hate Gamergate. It's a lost cause, a hate group, seems to be nothing but conspiracies, and full of hypocrisy. To be fair, I have plenty of friends within Gamergate, and we jokingly insult one another, knowing we disagree but can get along. I hate everything about Gamergate, but I won't judge anyone who follows it.

DmC is one of the coolest, most stylish games I've ever played, and I like it more than the original four, and I prefer the new Dante over DMC3 Dante. Sadly, just saying "I like DmC" has gotten me the worst online harassment I've ever dealt with. I've been threatened, called names, told to die, etc... all because I like a game others don't. The attitude has made me come to loathe the previous four games, which I used to consider favorites of mine, unfortunately.

I'm sorry, but there is a difference between an opinion and being flat out wrong. Nintendo have set the framework for a lot of standards in the gaming industry, that everyone else takes from, right down to the four button controller layout we use today. Saying they are "uninspired" is just blind hating.

I haven't noticed this, but depending on the content in said game and the power of the handheld, it is justified to charge that much for a handheld game, especially with the way they are going. Nintendo actually sell a lot of their Wii U and 3DS games at budget prices though (i.e. less than full retail price).

Quote:

I mean, some of their IPs can get a little repetitive at times, but more often than not, Nintendo sequels manage to do something really new or develop a franchise in a way that feels fresh. Once again, this isn't opinion, it's fact. You're just being ignorant if you think otherwise.

Not to mention how they do always try to get new IPs out there. Within the last year, they've debuted Splatoon and Codename S.T.E.A.M.

Quote:

Like what? The Nintendo NX hasn't even been officially unveiled yet, and we know very little about it, other than that it's going to be a console/handheld hybrid of some kind, and possibly more powerful than the PS4. Everything else you might hear about it is rumours and speculation.

Quote:

I agree with the YouTube thing, it is pretty stupid, but I'm pretty sure it's just gonna be a phase. Nintendo of Japan are pretty archaic at times, that's all.

I by no means think Nintendo is perfect, and I've dished out my fair share of criticism at them and even specific employees within the company for some of the things they do. However, I'm not gonna ignore the good things they do just so I can be an ignorant hipster.

It's OK if you don't like Nintendo games, but a lot of what you're saying is untrue, factually speaking.

@SonicBrawler182 Well to start off, yes, they are just rumors about the NX, but the rumor is no drive to put games in, DRM, and downloadable games only. I don't see how this couldn't be a bad thing. If it's the case.... bad word bad word bad word. lol

What games treat the audience like idiots or are just offensively bs? I'll name two. Super Princess Peach, I mean I don't see how this is acceptable at all. The whole mood swing idea for the girl who *finally* gets a game is just outright awful. People have also said it's bs that the game is easier than other Mario games, implying Nintendo doesn't think girls can do well at games, which, easy games are easy games, I can't complain there. But the whole thing being one big joke about a s** toy, being Peach's weapon called the "vibe scepter", with an ending joke saying "Can you hear your mother laughing at night?" Just.... Nintendo, what the hell?!

The second game, the one that treats people like idiots, is my most hated game I've ever played, Mario and Luigi: Dream Team. I've never played a game so offensive in my life. You get long, un-skippable moments of dialogue about every five to ten minutes, all being tutorials. Almost every new enemy you face, every new attack you get, every new map you visit, every everything... even all the way to the last boss, you're being fed tutorials nonstop. You even get tutorials to enemies you've already fought, that you got tutorials to before, with a "Mario wait! Do you remember how to fight this guy?" and when you select "Yes", your yellow fairy friend asks "Are you sure?"... Sigh.

You can defend this by saying "Well it's an RPG for kids, and it may be the first RPG they played." but that is simply no excuse at all. There's not a child in the entire world so stupid that they need this much tutorials. There's no excuse to feed un-skippable tutorials to the player every five to ten minutes. There's been easy RPG's for children in the past that didn't feed tutorials. My first game was Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, and I was three years old (almost four), and I played through that just fine. This kind of attitude toward the player is just unforgivable. Exactly how useless and idiotic does Nintendo think their audience are?

Finally to the other things you've said. Just because Nintendo are to thank for innovations in the past, does not excuse them for being lazy today. A lot of my favorite games were released on Nintendo systems, such as Megaman II and III, Mario RPG (Seven Stars or something like that?), Eternal Darkness, The World Ends With You, and a large list of others. As I said, I used to have respect for Nintendo. I used to be a loyal Nintendo fangirl. Saying they're uninspired is not saying they never were inspired. No, they used to be the Gods of the game industry, and now they're just existing. They are uninspired, but that doesn't mean they always were.

By back stabbing, I am referring specifically to just out of nowhere upping the price of their games, and the Youtube controversy. Some people are upset about figure prices in Toys to Life games, some are upset about certain games not having cross-buy, some are upset about DLC. I am upset about this.

Most of their sequels are not innovating that much at all. New Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Galaxy 2... they introduce a small few new things to their games but not enough. They feel like expansion packs on the games they follow up from. This doesn't mean I am excusing things like Call of Duty either, no. Any game that just feels like a new number on the end, I don't think is excusable, especially not when you could have just made this content an expansion. And the others, maybe the ones you said definitely do feel lazy (roughly said), Mario Kart sequels, Mario Party sequels, Animal Crossing sequels (Happy Home Designer tried to do something new. I can't be angry at it), and I know this will get me a lot of hate, but Super Smash 4... It had less content (the roster was bigger, sure), less things to do, far too many lazy clone characters that could have been alternate costumes... I appreciated the online fighting, but I couldn't help but feel I only got half of what I paid for.

Last thing I'll reply to in this post, as this is getting too lengthy... Those new IP's. Look, I'm not hating on Splatoon. I think it's one of the most ambitious game we've seen in the past few years, and I have nothing but respect for it, but does just a few new IP's or creative sequels in a handful of years really excuse Nintendo? I've seen plenty of PlayStation, Xbox, and PC exclusive creative sequels and new IP's pop up over and over, year after year, even if Xbox is on the weaker side, they do bring out some exciting things. (just wish one was a Lost Odyssey sequel...) I play on all of the consoles, all of the handhelds, and the PC, and I will continue to. You say I am blindly hating, but I still play my Nintendo games, I just now turned off my 3DS. One reason I criticize is because I play on all platforms, and every time I play a Nintendo game, I can't help but feel they're just screwing up more and more. I see people constantly bicker about why Sony and Microsoft are bad, but I never see it with Nintendo, and that makes me just more fed up.

The digital only route, while not my personal preference, is not an inherently bad thing, and most industry analysts would tell you that it very much looks like the future for all gaming consoles. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony, all went digital only with their upcoming consoles.

Just putting that out there. Otherwise, I don't care for baseless rumours.

*the Super Princess Peach bit*

I've actually played this game to the ending (contrary to most people who harp on about it), and while the game's gimmick is a bit questionable, "being emotional" has been a part of Peach's character since before this game so it's really just that part of her personality being turned into a gameplay mechanic that's actually really fun and creative (and honestly, why you would ever look to Peach for a good female role model is beyond me, as she's not supposed to be, she's a fairly bland character through and through). Also, Peach isn't the only character in the game that is effected by emotions, the enemies and bosses are also emotional (and their emotions effect their movement and attack patterns), so it's not like she's singled out here. Even Bowser is effected. As for the game being "too easy", it is easy if you just go through the game without exploring, but Super Princess Peach is more like a Yoshi's Island game than a Mario game (right down to the art style and them sharing some similar platform designs), in that the games are usually easy if you just want to get to the end, but more difficult if you want to collect everything. You are encouraged to explore these levels (you can't even complete the game if you don't find all of the Toads - some of which are actually pretty hard to find), and that's where the challenge comes from. It isn't a fast paced action platformer like Mario, it's more of a slow paced, exploration and puzzle platformer like Yoshi's Island. As for the ending, while I agree that the line sounds wrong out of context and I don't know how it slipped under the radar, they actually weren't trying to make a sex joke, and the line is fine when you understand the context of it. It was basically just referencing how the Vibe Scepter can control emotions even from afar, so that might be what's causing "your mother laughing" and what not. It's supposed to sound like something from a kid's storybook or something.

*the Mario & Luigi: Dream Team bit*

RPGs do tend to be more tutorial heavy than most games, especially these days, and it's justified because they are more complex games and their mechanics are much more arbitrary (meaning it's harder to just pick things up naturally because it's all based on made up battle rules and what not). Maybe Dream Team overdoes it a bit, but every RPG I've played within the last few years is tutorial heavy. I haven't played Dream Team, but I don't see how any tutorials could make you hate it so much, as the game looks solid in every aspect. It sounds like you are just blowing things out of proportion.

*the bit about Nintendo being uninspired*

So I suppose Wii U and 3DS are not innovative, then?

Because one of the main reasons the Wii U doesn't sell as well is because people only care about consoles that push graphics these days. Wii U is innovative and pushes the gameplay aspect of gaming forward in a way none of it's competitors have, but people don't buy it because it's too different to what people are used to. And you're really gonna call Nintendo "uninspired" for that?

Quote:
By back stabbing, I am referring specifically to just out of nowhere upping the price of their games, and the Youtube controversy. Some people are upset about figure prices in Toys to Life games, some are upset about certain games not having cross-buy, some are upset about DLC. I am upset about this.

I agree on the YouTube thing, but I don't know what you are talking about with game prices. You do realise that's a regional thing, right? Just because one division of Nintendo does something like that, doesn't mean all of them do. It's the same with literally any other major corporation. I certainly haven't noticed price inflation on Nintendo games where I live. If anything, things have been getting cheaper.

Quote:
Most of their sequels are not innovating that much at all. New Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Galaxy 2...

You say "most of their sequels" yet you only list three from one franchise. Two of which are actually quite innovative (3D World and Galaxy 2 do a lot more new than you are giving them credit for, which makes me think you haven't actually played them).

Quote:
And the others, maybe the ones you said definitely do feel lazy (roughly said), Mario Kart sequels, Mario Party sequels, Animal Crossing sequels (Happy Home Designer tried to do something new. I can't be angry at it)

Well I don't think any specific game franchises have the problem, just the odd Nintendo game might feel a little lazy at times (like NSMBWii and NSMB2, and honestly Star Fox: Zero in some respects). I actually am baffled you listed Mario Party there, as people complain it changes too much, especially with 9 and 10, which did tons of drastically new things.

Quote:
Super Smash 4... It had less content (the roster was bigger, sure), less things to do, far too many lazy clone characters that could have been alternate costumes... I appreciated the online fighting, but I couldn't help but feel I only got half of what I paid for.

It doesn't have less content. Less single player content? Yes, and I do wish it had more too. But it add tons more multiplayer and general content/features, not to mention all of the new characters and stages, and not to mention the ongoing DLC and balance updates. I could write an essay on the amount of new things Smash 4 does, and do remember that it is actually two games tailoured two different systems, not just one game. I actually did a review presentation for the game in college and the new content was my big focus.

Quote:
Last thing I'll reply to in this post, as this is getting too lengthy... Those new IP's. Look, I'm not hating on Splatoon. I think it's one of the most ambitious game we've seen in the past few years, and I have nothing but respect for it, but does just a few new IP's or creative sequels in a handful of years really excuse Nintendo?

No actually, but the thing is they've had more than a few. You probably don't realise half of them exist though. Xenoblade Chronicles, for example, is a new IP that debuted on the Wii and that series is owned by Nintendo. They've also been reviving franchises they haven't used in years, like Kid Icarus and Fire Emblem, and their newer games are totally fresh (especially Kid Icarus: Uprising, which may as well be a new IP).

@SonicBrawler182 You know, you're acting as though I don't know any games I am talking about. The topic does say "opinion" but you're making excuses to my opinion. I say Dream Team is as bad as I say? "You must be blowing it out of proportion." You sound like a fanboy, and I know, you probably aren't, but just accept some people hate things. I'll try to make this response shorter though. I get the feeling we're going to start pissing people off. lol

Dream Team... I don't know what RPG's you've played that you claim are tutorial heavy, but off the top of my head, I can't think of many big name recent ones that were. The Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, Shin Migami Tensei: Persona 4 Golden, to name a few had tutorials, but didn't drown you in them. I'm okay with tutorials, but if you don't believe me, go ahead and try Dream Team. Literally every five to ten minutes, if you aren't grinding or doing your own thing. Also, it's anything but deep. This isn't Mario RPG on the SNES. It's really a mix of action and turn based, and it's one of the easiest RPG's I've ever played. It would have been okay if it weren't for this issue too (there's some pretty bad writing problems too but not the point) as the previous entries weren't bad. I to this day thought Bowser's Inside Story was one of the more entertaining RPG's I've played.

The Wii-U games have nothing on the other three, not because of graphics, but because they just don't compare. There's a few on the Wii-U I am not including though, such as Splatoon, Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors. Those couldn't have been more cool than they were (yes, the Dynasty Warriors series is a guilty pleasure of mine, although I admit they're uninspired). Just think of what the other three are doing though. Xbox being the weakest, still has some impressive games, Killer Instinct being *my* personal favorite. I'm excited for Tomb Raider 2 as well. The PC... well I don't think I need to begin explaining how brilliant the selection of near-perfect indie games is on there. PlayStation... I can't even begin when it comes to those. The Last of Us and Bloodborne are two good ones to mention. I'm trying to focus on the current gen, by the way. I think as far as good game design goes, you just can't compare these recent Nintendo games to them. Hell... I love Hyrule Warriors but The Last of Us is vastly superior, any day.

Do you want me to list every bad game all four major platforms have ever made? I listed three because we've already taken this debate way too far. I agree Galaxy 2 is fun, but it was just the first game with a few small things added in, which as I said, could have simply been an expansion, much like that Luigi expansion to New Wii (haven't tried it).

Really? I am here listing games such as Mystic Quest and The World Ends With You, and you think I don't know what Xenoblade Chronicles is? xD. I'm not going to talk about Fire Emblem, I don't like it, and we don't need to have even more to argue about. It isn't for me. Kid Icarus on the other hand, yeah the 3DS reboot was creative enough. You're right it does almost count as it's own IP, but don't most reboots though?

Anyway, I haven't even replied to all of your points and I feel like this response is too long. If you're agreeing with me on this, it may be best to continue this in a PM. ._.

The Final Fantasy XIII trilogy

I love these three games to death and even I can admit they had a ton of tutorials in them. Though they were necessary. And in any case, I seriously doubt any game could be hate worthy based on it's tutorials.

How so? I have both a PS4 and Xbox One. And I've barely touched either. There are only one or two good exclusives on them. And no, the Last of Us does not count for PS4, as it is a remaster of a PS3 game that literally came out a year or two prior. Wii U on the other hand, has had a ton of excellent exclusives, certainly better than what the Wii had (which sold much better than any of the current systems so I don't know why you think "Wii U games don't compare" is why Wii U hasn't sold - most people agree it has the best exclusives).

PS4 and Xbox One are obviously better than Wii U for multi-plats, but if you have a gaming capable PC or laptop (I have the latter and my brother has the former), then that's not an issue as most multi-plats come to PC anyway and tend to be better in a lot of aspects.

Eeeeeh, not really. For example, The Last of Us is great, but half of that is to do with the story and cinematics, not the gameplay. Nintendo games outshine it in the gameplay aspect by far, since TLoU's gameplay is rushed in a lot of areas and it can get very repetitive and even contradictory to the story at times.

Quote:
but it was just the first game with a few small things added in

You must have played a different game then, as I could list a bunch of new things that game did.

Quote:

I don't even see what those games have to do with this discussion as they aren't even first party games.

That's really all I'm gonna say. It's OK to have an opinion, but don't just say things that are blatantly untrue or ignorant, as that invalidates your opinion.

>Complains about Nintendo being unoriginal and treating it's audience like idiots.
>Has Skylanders avatar.

okay.

This is my unpopular opinion:

Activison is the most uninspired, money grubbing company there is. They've turned Skylanders into the next Call of Duty. Call of Duty itself has gone down the actual **** hole with bland stories, gameplay and characters. Not only this, but every year Activison promises new and innovative concept and they never commit. They don't care about the people at all, they only care about the greenbacks that the people give them. Now compared to Nintendo, Activison seems like the more evil company.

@parisruelz12 I never said Activision isn't awful. Stating they are isn't an unpopular either since it seems everyone hates them, but no, I absolutely agree with you. I mean, I said I love the Dynasty Warriors series, and I admit how meh the whole series is, right? lol. You can dislike things about something but still enjoy that thing anyway. As I said, I hate Nintendo, but I still play some Nintendo games.

I think you missed my point. You're acting like Nintendo is the worst company out there, what I'm saying that Activison is the greater of two evils. :\ But okay.

@parisruelz12 Well the topic *is* called "Unpopular Opinions". It is my *unpopular* opinion about Nintendo. If it were called "Popular Opinions", I'd be saying crap about the original plans to the Xbox One, or things about Activision and EA, or that Mad Max: Fury Road was awesome.
