He gets paid by companies to have advertisements on his videos.

Not really. Since ads get continuously extended in lenght by YouTube and there's still a huge chunk of society who doesn't use adblock, poor them, but I'm guessing the thing is more or less balanced since they still watch them. I could be wrong though.

Not to mention the company and the YouTubers also have other ways of gaining earnings that no only consist of the ads.
