So I know that magnets and hard drives generally don't tend to get along. I tend to keep a few external hard drives around the place, particularly in the vicinity of my ps2, ps3 and ps4, and also, Skylanders. So, naturally, ever since buying these 'new guys' and learning that their 'swapabiltiy' is due to magnets, I got a tinnnyyy bit nervous. Nowadays, I keep the swap guys on a shelf at the opposite side of my room, but my question is this; are the magnets in the swap guys strong enough to be detrimental to hard drives if kept in close proximity.

I know this might sound silly, but as someone who is studying computers in-depth at college I'm...curious to find an answer.

Nope, not at all. The magnets aren't strong enough and the hdd should be mildly shielded. I've had 12" car sub-woofers near my harddrives to no effect.
