What do they teach you about your country during history class (or social studies as it's called in places)?

We get the facts and we are encouraged to look at them from every possible viewpoint of the specific time period.

AP classes rock.

This. AP classes are actually really good, in every subject.

As per the topic, I don't have any history classes this year per se.

Depends on the teacher. My ex-navy teacher was awesome and looked at everything from both points of view. My other one just went on with how horrible it was, and how lucky we are now.

I stopped taking History after year 10, but apparently there is some New Zealand history in it, which is apparently really boring. It's pretty much 'The English got people to sign a treaty and totally ****ed everyone over'. The rest is actually remotely interesting stuff about the rest of the world, like WWII and the black rights movement in America.

IKR!!

Wait, new thing. (Specifically for anyone in France) In America, students have an English class talking about writing and reading, and an optional French class for learning French. Is it the opposite across the pond? Or do you guys have like a writing class? (I guess it could go for any language really)

Yes, over here we have English as a second language subject. Like how you would treat French over there in America. Athough English is mandatory, and French is optional xP

I don't have social studies this year (I honestly have never been a fan of it in all my elementary and middle school years so I'm okay with the break). Next year I'll be taking world history, junior year I'll be taking US history, and senior year is economics for a semester and then government for the second semester, so I'll have to get back to you...

Regardless I can remember a bit of social studies from middle school (I absolutely despised how they taught it to us in elementary and have totally forgotten what I learned then):

6th - We learned a bit about Europe and Russia, other things too but I forgot them. The first semester we had a teacher who was elderly but nice, though he almost never laughed. The second semester we had a different one, she was alright but kinda strict.

7th - We learned about geography, the holocaust, Mahatma Gandhi, a lot about countries in Asia (specifically China, North and South Korea, and Japan), a few other things. The teacher was pretty nice and lighthearted, but his class was the only class I've ever been super close to falling asleep in during middle school.

8th - We watched CNN student news every Friday, we learned about the American Revolutionary War and other things around that time period and before that, about Lewis and Clark, about the Indian Removal Act, a few other things. The teacher was nice, she almost never frowned, seriously.

Yeah, I'm really bored smilie

He's the biggest patriot I've ever met. He sucks the life out of us every class so he can live forever. He must be like, 400 or something.

He thinks everyone america has slaughtered deserved to die, and if we don't support everything our sick and twisted military does, we suck. He believes that every American is some sort of god and he talks about other countries like they're trash, England specifically. He never shuts up about "England and their tyranny". Good god.

When studying history, it is very important to know that you shouldn't force modern morals and ideas on past events; to get the best understanding of history, you need to look at it like people did back in the period. For example, today we consider it very barbaric and cruel to invade another nation for territorial and economic gain, but up until about 200 years ago, that was the way the world worked, and sometimes it was thought necessary for survival.

In most countries in Europe and Asia, foreign language is taught at a very early age. Here in America, it's not taught until high school.

That needs to change. Seriously.

Before I took history GCSE, we did post WW2 20th century. So... Korean war, cold war... Mostly cold war. In history GCSE I did 1918-1939 in Germany and America. So, that's post WW1 Germany, Nazi Germany, the roaring 20's in America, the Wall-street crash and getting out of the wall-street crash etc.

Did very little of the history of my own country, which I guess I had no issue with because I'd done that during primary school anyway.

We're learning about the history of America. Right now we just took a quiz on the California Gold Rush. We mainly just do stuff out of a textbook without spending much time on it. D:
My history teacher...well, she's nice, but not really that notable. My classmates, on the other hand, are absolute idiots. They're constantly talking and swearing and getting off-topic and the teacher does nothing about it. :c Stupid public schooling.

I like the teacher, he's funny and enjoyable. However, I don't like how he talks about Christianity. I get that it's his opinion, it's just upsetting to me.

Well... In 6th grade I barely learned crap about the Greeks.

In 8th grade I learned about Australia, the Middle East and it's religions, China. Heck my Geography Teacher even went to Australia during that year over winter break. That was really awesome.

10th grade we learned more about history of such things, Like the world wars, revolution, How america was discovered. A lot of things. And the Teacher was super awesome.

11th grade I have U.S. History, which is basically learning about America's history, or most of the time it is. We're learning deeper in WWII. Apparently the government told Walt (Yep Walt Disney people!) to make some cartoons to help with the war and such, and Walt made 68 hours of such cartoons. Most of them being minutes. Which is a lot of cartoons. And the Teacher is actually a very cool guy, he has outside hobbies. He even collects stuff, like Star Wars. Plus he teaches film studies, which some of my friends have. So he's a awesome teacher.
